PERSONAL APPEARANCE
by Jerry June Berger
Happiness is a nice ditch de-
partment: (and we learned about
this from a Houston paper.)
When Jim and Bill Koehler, 1
and 10 respectively, leave their
home in Houston and visit their
grandfather’s ranch near Hondo,
their very favorite sport is dig
ging ail the ditches, tunnels, etc.,
they want to (Grandfather Is
A. J, Hardt.)
Alter a recent visit, Jim was
back home and having some
trouble with arithmetic home-
work and furthermore it didn’t
seem to bother him much But
it did bother his dad.
"Get with it, Jim," dad ex
claimed. “Unless you learn yotif
arithmetic you’ll never be an en-
gineer or an architect or an
astronaut We re not goihg to let
you wind up a ditch digger.’ ’
A few miutes later Mrs
Koehler found Jim with his head
buried in his arms and sought
to comfort him. "If you had
done your work in the first place.
Daddy wouldn’t have fussed at
you.”
"I’m not crying because Dad
day fussed at me," Jim blubber-
ed. "I’m crying because i can't
be a ditch digger when I grow
up."
Mrs. Koehler has written her
father to make ditch-digging less
glamorous, the next time the
kids visit the Hardt ranch.
jib
Then sometimes, kids are con-
cerned about the feelings of their
fathers.
Second graders in Inell (Mrs,
Jimmy) Rogers Blue Bird group
made toy deer from spools and
pipe cleaners at their Monday
meeting. That night each little
girl planned to present said deer
to her dad, IF he had not shot
a buck by that time.
These same youngsters had a
small gift shower for one of their
members who is moving to For-
mosa with her family Young
Nancy Dannermiller (her mother
is the former Frances Zerr)
will soon be on her way to for-
eign lands and Nancy has orders
from her fellow Blue Birds to
open only one package per day
on the trip over.
jjb
At last week's elementary P-
TA meeting, Mrs. Joe Embry re-
ported that approximately $500
had been cleared at the annual
Halloween Carnival This repre-
sents a lot of work on the part
of a few individuals, but it is
also about as fast a way of mak-
ing money as can be arranged
in a small town for a one-day
event.
After the organization keeps
out a small amount on which to
operate until next fall, money
will be divided equally between
the two schools of Lacy and Mey-
er and principals at each school
will determine how it can best
be used.
Principal M L McDowell at
Meyer thinks perhaps the pour-
ing of a big concrete slab might
help at their school. On muddy
days there is a great deal of
/"tracking in" when the children
are allowed out at Dll
Principal E J Hllsher of Lacy
says he has not determined how
to use their half, but thinks per-
haps some books for the library
would be in order Books wear
out with much handling, and of
course teachers and principals
certainly want them to be used.

We were among the 250 guests
at the LBJ Ranch last Thursday
when the President and First
Lady of our land entertained for
the President-elect of Mexico and
his wife, Mr and Mrs Diaz Or
The &
Anvil Htrafe
daz. The weather was made to
order as it was a delightfully
pleasant Texas fall day
The atmosphere was so friend
I.v and casual that it was rather
difficult to imagine that here we
were, a Mrs John Q Pubic ,
slinking hands ami exchanging
greetings with the leaders of two
great nations, the governors of
several states, and political and
entertainment world big names.
There is still enough "small
town" in us that we continue to
get a real charge from such
gatherings.
Apparently others feel that way
too. One of the entertainers, a
former Miss Texas who is now
the wife of Dr. Jim Swink of
Tyler, was as excited as a school
girl over rubbing elbows with
Eddie Fisher, a fellow entertain
er of the afternoon (He. inciden-
tally, gave the finest informal
’ concert" of pop songs and old
standards that we have heard i
Yet under the spreading oaks
along the Pedemales and !>*'
neath blue Texas skies, Preu
dents, Governors, Judgps, enter
tainers, all these dignitarie
were as folksy and tfewn-to-
earth as Hondoans over their
morning coffee kiatsCh. Appar-
ently, a great time was had I
all.
