PREVENTION
Crabb reiterated his concern
Tuesday about the present sit-
nation on Hondo's northside.
On Sundays," lie said, ‘‘14th
Street is an ogen race track for
ears driven by 'self - styled
Pachucos’ at whatever h i g h
’peed they choose. Not once
have I seen a traffic officer in
the area "
He says that "Prevention
should replace apprehension
He insists that citizens must be
guaranteed protection before
they will file any complaints
themselves for fear of reprisal
from the offenders. He continu-
ed, It is up to the law-abiding
citizens of any community to ac-
cept the responsibility for t h e
protection of their neighbors
wh|> need help, as well as for
themselves. 1 am more concern-
ed about the safety of those who
fear to seek it for themselves".
SHOOTINGS ,
In comment about, reported
shootings. Sheriff Hittfelder said
that only one incident in t h e
• trouble zone" was reported to
the sheriff s department. This
was on the night of Jan. 31. this
year. The complaint was inves-
tigated with this action Juan
Sanchez and Jose Gonzales, both
of Hondo, were shot in the arm
while in the vicinity of t h e
abandoned West Ward School.
The affray hpd resulted over ill
feelings at Some sort of party or
dance at a house in the area No
charges were filed because the
victims refused to identify their
a-suilant.
' On Eeb. 6 and 7, the resi
deuce of Jose Reyes, 1305 I3lh
Street, "was shot full of holes,
>n thy two successive nights by
tnknown persons." This was re-
torted by the Reyes family but
hey had no Information to go
go on.
Hitzfelder says that a full ir.
i-estigation was made which
proved to the satisfaction of th -
sheriff's department that t h as-
had found the guilty parties but
they werJ- unable to prove any-
thing for lack cf eye witnesses
Vo- charges were flits! for lack
of evidence
The old West Ward school
building, says Hitzfelder, has
been the hideout for under - age
drinking parties and all manner
of immoral conduct. At t i m e -
‘ evidences of burglaries,-'actual
stolen property, has been found
and recovered. When the J a x
Warehouse was burglarized, sev-
eral cases of Jax beer were
found under the floor w hen a
trapdoor in the stage area was
opened The area is a shambles
of filth and disorder Blankets
indicate it is used as a ‘bunk
ground,'.
We patrol the area often and
catch offenders as we c a n,”
says Hitzfelder "Our depart-
ment keeps the city of Hondo
definitely under its protection
and our patrol cars cover t h e
city and are on call 21 hours a
day The call hoard in the office
-is never closed We welcome, any
opportunity to be of service "
