No charges were filed in Med-
ina County against Colunga ac-
cording to Sheriff Hitzfelder.

The Flower and Garden Foun-
dation announced today the win-
ners of the 1964 "Young America
Gardens'' contest
Young America Gardeners of
West End Baptist Church, Hondo,
r eel- -d .in) place in the Club
Division. • •
The “Young America Gar-
dens” contest has teen held an-
nually since 1360.
In the last five years over
15(003 young gardeners have en-
tered this contest. One of the
Flower and Garden Foundation's
primary objectives is to stimu-
late interest in gardening among
young people of today, so there
mav be a deeper appreciation of
rivi- beautification through hcr-
ticulture rin the future
LOCAL ACTTYITY
The local group has eighteen
members ami is sponsored by
Mrs Alex Grant, Jr., Mrs. Wal-
ler Sutherland and Mra. Granvail
Knowles. Mrs. Paul Reily in-
structed the young gardener*
Their project was Plant for
Others". They planted a cera-
mic planter for Medina Memor-
ial Hospital; potted a large fern
for the second grad* room in
Hondo; made a planter and
planted with varieties of indoor

hosts on the tour through Hondo.
The judges praised the entire
community for the outstanding
decorations, but only judg-
ed those homes and business
houses that had registered with
the Chamber.
In outdoor decora'ions, first
place went to Mr and Mrs. G.
C. Gri-'ham and Mr and Mrs.
Jack Ulbrich. Jr . who combin-
ed their decorating theme. Sec-
ond award was given to Mr ant
Mrs John Wentz, and third
place was awarded to Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Beasley.
Mrs. Lyda Schwecrs received
first place for her front doqr dec-
oration; Mr and Mrs Albert
Haegetin, second: and, Mr. and
Mrs D. Bonner Carl, third.
Medina Electric Cooperative
Inc. took first place in the bus-
iness house awards F, R Lein-

and 'he Cifv Utilities window re-

trees, pecan trees, plants, for the
Elia Austin Orphan Home in San
Antonio,
Other local projects included
making up 30 packages of day
lily seed which had been hand
pollenized by the group: rooted
pin* grape boxes of "mum" cut-
tings; distributed 60 fine seedling
peach seeds for planting: rooted
a wash tub of fig cuttings; dis-
tributed 20 young peran trees
and rooted roses and cuttings.
Each child had an individual
project in addition lo the group
endeavor. Each one had sixty
di'ferent kinds of seed to plant
and they distributed manv plan's
to tbe congregation of their
ehurch. They also made rose Pe-
tal sachets for church families,
and teamed many different gar-
dening skills,
