Construction begins on new St. Regis newsprint mill in Lufkin
LUFKIN - Concrete was
poured onto a platform at the
St. Regis Lufkin newsprint
mill Wednesday to begin a
$75 million expansion of the
plant.
St. Regis President Ed-
ward J. McMahon said the
pending merger between St.
Regis and Champion Inter-
national will not affect the
operations in Lufkin.
“Champion is not in the
newsprint business and they
are enthusiastic about the
newsprint business.”
The expanded plant will
have more potential capaci-
ty than St. Regis needs at
present, McMahon said, and
is being being designed with
an expanding market in
mind.
The work includes replac-
ing boilers in the existing
plant with modern equip-
ment. Some of the boilers
currently is use are original
equipment.
McMahon said, except for
one mill in Tacoma, Wash.,
Champion and St. Regis are
not competitors and there
should be no change in
management of the two com-
panies facilities when the
merger is complete.
