LIVINGSTON—It is better
to give than receive, or so
we’ve been told.
The people who’ve told us
this are mostly not football
coaches, who realize that
giving away the football is a
sure way to lose games.
The Livingston Lions of
Coach Van Nelson handed
the ball over to the Palestine
Wildcats five time here Fri-
day night in Lions Stadium
before an average crowd on
a hot and humid September
evening.
The Wildcats defeated Liv-
ingston, 27 to 13, in a non-
conference game.
If you are planning to
write dear ole Grandy a let-
ter, please don’t tell her
about the football game.
The two ball clubs made
enough mistakes for the en-
tire season. However,
Palestine was good enough
ball club on this Friday night
to win the game. If the 'Cats
had been playing Jackson-
ville, Henderson, Athens, or
Carthage they would have
been beaten badly.
The Lions fumbled the ball
six times and Palestine
recovered five.
Palestine was credited
with seven fumbles and the
Lions recovered four. The
Wildcats were charged with
14 penalties for 90 yards. It
makes you wonder if the
’Cats really won the game.
Folks, it is going to be a
long, long football season for
the Lions. There is no other
way to say it.
The Lions will play host to
Cleveland on Friday night,
Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Lion
Stadium. The Indians are
2-0-0 for the season.
Cleveland defeated Liberty,
41 to 6, Friday night.
Quarterback Ryan Mathis,
a 170-pound senior, turned in
an excellent job for the
Wildcats. The Lion defensive
unit gave him a rough time
on many, many plays. But
the talented signal caller
worked overtime for his
team’s win.
Mathis completed ll-of-16
attempts for 115 yards and
had one pass intercepted by
Dezell Harrell. Mathis car-
ried the pigskin 11 times for
69 yards (minus 35) and a net
of 34 yards. He punted three
times for 103 yards and a 34.3
yards kicking average (had
punts of 30, 34 and 39 yards).
Palestine had nine backs
to carry the ball Friday
night. 'Cats had 43 running
plays for 223 yards (minus
54) and a net 169 yards.
Wildcats had 115 yards
passing and 169 on the
ground and a total of 284
yards. ’Cats had 19 first
downs.
Running back Ivory
Brown, 190-pound
sophomore, was the leading
rusher for the 'Cats with 46
yards on 14 carries. He also
scored on a one yard run and
a 53-yard punt return.
Split end Darryl Dew, a
150-pound senior, caught 7
passes for 89 yards. He came
through with catches of 7,14,
19, 11, 9, 14 and 14 yards.
Palestine’s defensive unit
was just too much for the
Lions. Lions had only eight
first downs.
Quarterback Quinn Lewis,
a senior, completed 5-of-13
attempts for 24 yards and
one TD and had one pass in-
tercepted. Runnning back
Demetrius Love was 1-of-l in
the passing department for
33 yards.
End Stephen Puckett, a
senior, had four
catches—33, 3, 4, and 1
yards—for 41 yards and
scored one TD. Jeff Noble
caught one for 12 and Love
had one catch for 4 yards.
Li vi ngston’s running ga me
ran into a brick wall against
a mighty tough Palestine
team. Fumbles and fumbles
really hurt the Lions. Lions
had 47 running plays for 149
yards (minus 54) and a net of
95 yards.
Demetrius Love, a
175-pound senior, does his
job. But Friday night the ace
runner was tackled again
and again by a host of ’Cats.
He had 17 carries for a net of
48 yards and scored one TD.
Quarterback Quinn Lewis
had 14 carries and a minus 19
yards.
Running back Tony
Swilley was inserted into the
game late in the fourth
quarter and did a good job.
He had 8 carries for 54 yards
Lions had 95 yards on the
ground and 57 in the air and
a grand total of 152 yards.
Palestine is 2-0-0 for the
season and Livingston is
0-2-0. Lions own a seven
game losing streak,
Palestine kicked off to the
Lions and Livingston set up
shop at their own 31 yard line
to start the contest. Fullback
David Peterson carried for
one. Then QB Quinn Lewis
took the snap from center
Marty Gibbs and fumbled
the ball away at the 26 yard
line with 11:16 left in the first
quarter.
On the first play the ’Cats
were off sides and were
issued a five yard penalty.
So, the touchdown drive
covered 31 yards and six
plays. Running back Ivory
Brown scored from the one
over right tackle with 8:34 on
the clock. Rick Crabtree
kicked the extra point and
the 'Cats had a 7 to 0 lead. A
big play in the drive was an
18-yard run by quarterback
Mathis to me two yard line.
Eric Rimes kicked off and
Demetrius Love took the ball
at the 7 and quickly returned
to the 20. However, Love was
hit so hard he fumbled the
ball and Palestine recovered
at the 20. However, the of-
ficials flaged Palestine for
being off sides during the
kickoff and the ’Cats had to
kicked the ball over. So,
Rimes kicked off gain.
Emory Lewis fumbled the
ball out of bound at the 15.
Late in the first quarter
the ’Cats were forced to punt
from their own 46. So, Mathis
punted the ball and Keith
Johnson caught the ball and
returned the pigskin to the
Paletine 36 for a return of 48
yards.
Quarterback Lewis and
Lions started moving the
ball. Dezell Harrell gave the
locals a chance to yell when
he broke on a 14 yard run to
the 11 and a first down. On
fourth and two, Love took the
ball and started around the
left end. However, he was
stopped for no gain and the
'Cats kept the Lions out of
the end zone with 1:39 left in
the first quarter.
On the first play at the 2,
quarterback Mathis fumbled
the ball and Keith Johnson
recovered for the Lions with
1:36 on the clock at the 6
yard line.
Quinn Lewis worked his
way to the 3 and then runn-
ing back Demetrius Love
went over right tackle into
the end zone for the TD with
1:08 on the clock. Jeremy
Braziel kicked the extra
point and the game was tied
a 7-7.
With 9 minutes left in the
second quarter, quarterback
Lewis fumbled the ball and
the 'Cats recovered at the
Palestine 42. On the first
play Q-back Mathis broke
around the right side and
went to the 11 yard line for a
47 yard gain. But during the
run the ’Cats were charged
with a clip and Palestine was
given a 15 yard penalty and
the ball was placed at the
Lion 29. Five plays later
Darryl Demar, 200-pound
senior, went off right tackle
into the end zone for the TD
with 7:03 on the clock. Rick
Crabtree kicked the extra
point, 14 to 7.
The third quarter was all
Palestine. Jeremy Braziel
kicked off and the ’Cats took
over at their own 45. In eight
plays the ’Cats traveld 55
yards for the TD. Running
back Eric Rimes, 208-pound
sophomore, turned on his
jets and sailed around the
right side of the line for a
touchdown from 16 yards out
with 9:18 on the clock in the
third period. Rick Crabtree
kicked the extra point, 21 to
7.
Jeremy Braziel was called
upon to punt from the Lion
23. Running back Ivory
Brown caught the ball at the
Palestine 47 and went up the
middle and then cut across
to his right. Then sailed
down the sideline for the TD.
The run covered 53 yards.
Rick Crabtree’s extra point
attempt was blocked by
Dezell Harrell. So, the 'Cats
had a 27 to 7 lead.
Dezell Harrell recovered a
Palestine fumble with 7:56
left in the game at the
Palestine 38. Tony Swilley
got things going as he car-
ried to the 30. Craig Bobany
to the 28. Bogany then car-
ried to the 25 and 15. On the
next play Palestine was
charged with a five yard
penalty and the ball moved
to the four. Two plays later
quarterback Lewis hit
Stephen Puckett with a four
yard touchdown pass with
4:50 on the clock. Lewis'
pass for the 2-point conver-
sion failed.
Palestine had a 27 to 13 vic-
tory. Most folks started leav-
ing the stadium in the early
minutes of the fourth
quarter.
