KANSAS COACH Mike Gottfried, talking about the winning
traditions at Nebraska and Oklahoma: “I couldn’t help but
think about how many opposing coaches they’ve forced into
the insurance business.” Told that the odds of his Jayhawks
winning the Big Eight Conference had been set at 100 to 1. Gott-
fried replied: “Who’s the one guy who thinks we can do it?”

compared to California. “This is the slow lane. I’m used to
shopping malls and concrete. All I see here is miles and miles

......ARIZONA STATE’S offensive linemen have self-imposed
discipline. Their motto is: “You walk, you pay.” A player
dragging back to the huddle pays five cents under a system of
fines worked out by the players. Offsides cost 15 cents. The
maximum penalty is 50 cents—for messing up at the goal line.
Another motto, this from tackle Coach Tom Freeman: “It’s
better to die at birth than jump offsides at the goal line. " The
fines come from a club formed in January by the offensive
linemen. It has officers, bylaws and numerous parties. Tem-
porarily, they call themselves “Hogs,” until they can think of a
better name. Freshmen are “Piglets.” Shirts and caps pur-
chased by the fines have been ordered. Coaches are delighted,

THE HTH ANNUAL Polk County Folklife Festival 10 K (6.2
miles) run will start from the Burger King parking lot in Liv-
ingston on Saturday, Oct. 13 starting at 8 a.m. The entry fee is
$8 for pre-registration; $10 on the day of the race, and a free
T-shirt will be given to the first 200 entrants. Trophies will be
presented to the first five finishes, male and female, and a
drawing for prizes after the race. Entry forms are available at
the Chamber of Commerce office. For more information con-

CROWD—Running back Demetrius I>ove (5) of Livingston is
about to be grounded by a pack of Wildcats of Palestine in Lion
Stadium Friday night. Ready to tackle the speeders are Glenn
Guy (15), Darn! Dew (21 and Jeff Hunting (23). Love had 17
carries for a net of 48 yards and scored one TD. Wildcats
defeated the Lions, 27 to 13.

SHEPHERD HIGH will be at Orangefield Friday night for a
non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. Orangefield started pre-
season drills in early August with 22 lettermen, 9 offensive and
8 defensive regulars, back from last year’s club that posted a
2-8-0 record.........COACH BEN MITCHELL’S Falcons of Huff-
man will travel to Coldspring Friday night to battle the Tro-
jans in a 7:30 p.m. Fans will ha ve a chance to see All-State run-
ning back Greg Moore in action for the Falcons. He is rated

HIGH Indians, the No. 1 Class AA ranked team in the state,
will be at Diboll Friday night for an 8 p.m. game. Then on Fri-
day night, Sept. 28 the Indians will open District 23-AA season
hosting Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs in an 8 p.m. game,

INTEREST IN FROG LAND? During the Wednesday noon
meeting of the TCU Frog Club at the Colonial Cafeteria near
the campus was standing room only. Two dozen or more could
neither sit nor eat, but 6tood arounefevaiting to hear Coach Jim
Wacker. It was the largest gathering—estimated 350—in nine
years, according to TCU Chancellor Dr. William Tucker, an
unabashed fan........COACH TOM LANDRY on Washington’s
0-2 start. “They’ve played two of the best teams (Miami and
San Francisco) in the first two weeks. The league set them up
good. They got what they wanted. They kept the NFC East
close, at least for awhile.” On Tuesday, Spet. 11 was Coach
Landry’s 60th birthday. He said a nice gift would be if the
sports writers didn’t ask him about the Giants game. He didn’t
get his wish........THE EAGLES BLITZ less than almost any
team in the NFL, which should be good news for QB
Hogeboom, who was beaten lup by the Giants. “Learning to
play in the NFL is not an easy task mentally,” Landry said.
