ARIZONA STATE’S offensive linemen have self-imposed
discipline. Their motto is: “You walk, you pay.” A player
dragging back to the huddle pays five cents under a system of
fines worked out by the players. Offsides cost 15 cents. The
maximum penalty is 50 cents—for messing up at the goal line.
Another motto, this from tackle Coach Tom Freeman: “It’s
better to die at birth than jump offsides at the goal line.” The
fines come from a club formed in January by the offensive
linemen. It has officers, bylaws and numerous parties. Tem-
porarily, they call themselves “Hogs,” until they can think of a
better name. Freshmen are “Piglets.” Shirts and caps pur-
chased by the fines have been ordered. Coaches arc delighted.

EAGER TO PLAY at home after opening with two tough
road games, the Dallas Cowboys (1-1) host the Philadelphia
Eagles (1-1) today in the Cowboys’ 1984 home opener at Texas
Stadium. CBS-TV will carry the game starting at 3 p.m. The
euphoria of their opening-night triumph over the Los Angeles
Rams proved shortlived for the Cowboys, who were humbled
Sunday by a mistake-filled afternoon at Giants Stadium. In an
early-season battle for the NFC East lead, the New York
Giants took advantage of four Dallas turnovers to deal the
Cowboys a 28-7 defeat. The Cowboys outgained the Giants 344
yards to 284 and had more first downs, 23 to 15, but they allow-
ed the New Yorkers three touchdowns on two one-play drives
after turnovers and a fumble return.

THE COWBOYS hold a 31-16 series lead over the Eagles, in-
cluding a two-game sweep last year, the first by either team
since Dallas took two from the Eagles in ’78. The Cowboys and
Eagles split in ’79, ’80 and ’81 when theywere rivals for the
NFC East title. In ’82 they met only once because of the strike,
the Eagles winning 24 to 20 at Texas Stadium. I,ast season
Dallas beat the Eagles 37 to 7 at Texas Stadium and 27 to 20 at
Veterans Stadium........TOM LANDRY, the dean of NFL
coaches, is the second winningest coach in NFL history with a
25-year record of 235-135-6, including 20-15 in the playoffs. He
trails only George Halas (325-151-31) in victories. Only Curly
Lambeau, who coached the Packers 29 straight seasons from
1921-49, has coached an NFL team for more consecutive years
than Landry, who is in his 25th year with the Cowboys.
Landry’s teams have compiled a league-record 18 straight
winning seasons (1966-83) and have appeared in a record five
Super Bowls. The Cowboys have been to the playoffs 17 of the
past 18 years, including an NFL record nine consecutive ap-
pearances from 1975-83.

TEXAS GOV. Mark White criticized the state’s high school
football coaches, saying they should worry more about
students’ futures than winning football games. “I’m frankly
tired of seeing some coaches come out and say, ‘Why don’t you
let our kids flunk one course?’ Some of them are more concern-
ed about winning ball games than about teaching kids,” said
said.

“PLAYING COLLEGE FOOTBALL is one of the greatest
feelings that I have ever imagined,” says Harry Newsome of
Wake Forest University. “I never really expected to play foot-
ball at the college level because I was a backup kicker and an
average quarterback in high school. But getting a chance to
play was a dream of mine; and when it came true, I was over-
whelmed with excitement. The thrill of hearing the crowds
roar and competing against other schools makes me proud of
what college football really stands for.”
