“To my knowledge, we are
the only full service security
service in East Texas,” says
Larry C. Smith, president
and chief executive officer of
Eastex Industrial Security,
Inc. of Livingston. “We can
do anything in the security
field.”
And according to Smith,
the need in the Lake Liv-
ingston area is increasing.
“With the influx of people in-
to this area,” he said,
“always with the good, you
get the bad. People used to
say of this area, everybodt
knows everybody. That’s no
longer true. The volume of
crime is increasing and
we’re now getting the scum-
of-the-earth thief, the guy
who will go into a home and
grab up everything in sight
without any qualms about
it.”
Most burglaries, said
Smith, are done by people
passing through, and the
chances of catching them is
pretty slim.
“We have a lot of retire-
ment people around here.
They’ve worked and saved
all their lives, and even if
they have insurance cover-
ing their household goods, no
amount of insurance can
repay them for the sentimen-
tality attached to some fami-
ly heirloom. One alarm that
scares off one thief has paid
for itself.”
Smith finds through his ex-
perience that home security
systems work. “As long as I
worked in the Sheriff’s
Department here, I don’t
ever remember a burglary
of a home that had an alarm
system.”
“You have to look at it
from the thief’s standpoint.
If you see a house tagged
with a sign that says it has
an alarm, why should he
take a chance when there
are other houses around that
don’t have an alarm? Other-
wise, they can go in and take
all the time they want before
anyone returns.”
Eastex Industrial Security
can put together any types of
system to fit a client’s par-
ticular needs. For example
one can have a front door
light that automatically com
es on when the entrance is
approached. Smith says they
would first make a security
survey and then make
recommendations for both
security and fire.
The heart of the system is
a computer receiver located
in the Sheriff’s department.
It uses the telephone system
and has an instant response
capability. The direct com-
puter connection with the
Sheriff’s office permits the
simultaneous monitoring of
up to 999 separate alarm
systems for each of two
receivers.
The company’s alarm
system is fully automatic,
working while you are at
home or away. When it is
triggered, it continues to dial
the computer until it gets a
response.
There’s no way, says
Smith, that it can be put on
hold or trapped by other
delays, whereas other
systems involve the old tape
dialer, a hit or miss proposi-
tion at best. The tape dialer
will attempt to contact the
monitoring station as many
times as permitted by the
length of the tape, normally
10 minutes, and then stops.
The Eastex computer is
also programmed to indicate
the type of emergency in
progress (burglary, fire or
medical alert) and
documents each incident by
producing a tape printout.
“We’ve had many calls,
from unsatisfied customers
of other companies, asking if
we could convert other
systems to ours. We can and
also have the capability to
add other features.
Many old alarm systems
are seven to eight years old
and many of these aren’t
even functional. They are
outdated and you can’t even
buy parts for them. The
equipment that Eastex will
install is high tech state of
the art, all compluterized,
and as modem as can be
bought anyplace.
Smith said he will per-
sonally guarantee service
within 24 hours after a
customer call, and as far as
cost to the client is concern-
ed, he noted, “I’ll compare
apples with apples against
anybody.”
Smith came to the security
field with practical ex-
perience as a law enforce-
ment officer plus special
training. He learned his
trade through a complex
seven year apprenticeship
during which he was able to
establish a diverse ex-
perience base in the fields of
security and law enforce-
ment.
Following a three year
stint in the U.S. Army, Smith
returned to Polk County
where he served as a Deputy
Sheriff for thirty months
before accepting a position
as Security Officer with the
Texas Department of Cor-
rections at Huntsville. In
January of 1978 Smith was
appointed Polk County Chief
Deputy Sheriff and function-
ed in that capacity until
February 1979. For the next
three years Larry Smith
held jobs ranging from
guard supervisor to branch
manager with two contract
security firms. Times were
tough, and Larry worked
hard with determination to
learn as much as he could
about the contract security
business. In February 1982
Larry Smith was able to
form the company that
would become Eastex In-
dustrial Security, Inc.
What began as a local
guard contract, with Cham-
pion Building Products,
quickly expanded to include
the protection of plants in
five additional states. Six-
teen months after his modest
start, Smith had assembled
an organization whose ser-
vices included: uniformed
security officers, in-
vestigative services, man-
dog narcotics teams, access
control systems, polygraph
examination service, and
loss prevention surveys.

shows the signal control center of his secuirty system in the
Polk County Sheriff’s Office. It has a digital readout that gives
the dispatcher the code number of the home. A file card of that
home immediately gives the name of the owner, emergency
numbers and directions on how to get there — including a map
if necessary. For more information call 327-7123 or 398-4772.
Eastex Industrial Securi-
ty, Inc. became the ONLY
full service contract security
firm in East Texas in
February this year when the
alarm division began opera-
tions. After several con-
ferences with Sheriff Ted
Everitt, during which the
needs of the community
were discussed, a decision
was reached for the com-
pany to bring in the most
modern, high tech alarm
equipment available.”
Eastex Industrial Securi-
ty, a Texas Corporation, is
located at 411 N.
Washington. From those of-
fices the Corporate Staff con-
sisting of I,arry C. Smith

tional, guarantee is included
in every transaction,” says
Smith. “If the customer is
not satisfied, then I am not
satisfied.”
