Archer City receives Home Grant
Two rabies cases
Community
to replace homes for eligible citizens prlsenfconcert confirmed in Megargel
The City of Archer City has re-
ceived a grant from the Texas De-
partment of Housing and Commu-
nity Affairs to provide financial as-
sistance to at least four homeowners
in the City whose homes are in need
of rehabilitation or replacement. Re-
placement will involve the demoli-
tion or removal of your current home
and replaced with a new home built
on the same lot.
The City is asking all citizens to
contact City Hall if your home or
someone you know has a home that is
in such condition that rehabilitation
would be too expensive for you or
them to repair. If the applicant's in-
come fall under the income limits set
forth below, then they would qualify
for assistance. This is a 100% assis-
tance to have your home replaced. In
other words, there will be no costs to
the homeowners to have their home
rehabilitated or replaced, if deter-
mined eligibility.
The City of Archer City received
enough funds to assist approximately
4 or 5 homeowners. The financial
assistance will be in the form of a
forgivable loan at 0% interest: The
homeowners will not be required to
repay the loan if they remain in the
new home for at least five years after
construction completion.
The purpose of this Program is to
assist qualifying low and very low-
income households by providing fi-
nancial assistance for the rehabilita-
tion or replacement of their substan-
dard homes. The focus of the reha-
bilitation work to be performed will
be to provide safe, decent and sani-
tary housing by bringing existing sub-
standard housing units into compli-
ance with the Texas Minimum New
and Rehabilitation Construction Stan-
dards, as well as all applicable local
codes and ordinances.
The City is urging all eligible citi-
zens to apply as soon as possible. If
you are interested in applying for this
program, please contact the City of
Archer City at City Hall, 118 South
Sycamore Street, Archer City, Texas
76351 during office hours to obtain
an application.
Rules under this current HOME
grant require that to be eligible for
this assistance, the applicant (or head
of household if more than one person
in the family) must currently own
and reside in the home to be replaced,
be a U.S. Citizen, and have an in-
come at or below 30% of the area's
median income based on family size.
Presently, the maximum income
guidelines are as follows:
1 person: $8,350
2 persons: $9,550
3 persons: $10,750
4 persons: $11,950
5 persons: $12,900
6 persons: $13,850
7 persons: $14,800
8 persons: $15,750
Applications will be accepted until
all funds are obligated; however, the
sooner you apply the better chance of
receiving assistance.
If you have questions or need addi-
tional information about this pro-
gram, please call, Mike Walthall,
HOME Grant Administrator for the
City of ArcherCity, at 800/775-2633,
extension 24, or call L.B. Boren,
City Manager, at 940/574-4570 to
pick up an application.
Sunday evening
The Archer City Community Choir
will present a Christmas concert Sun-
day evening, December 10th. The con-
cert, titled The Greatest Story, will be
held at First Baptist Church in Archer
City and is free to the public. It will
begin at 7:00 p.m.
This is the fourth production to be
presented by the Community Choir,
under the direction of Billy Moore,
Minister of Music at First Baptist
Church, since it was formed in 1998.
The choir continued as an outreach
after members took part in the Picture
Show Players and Ministerial Alli-
ance production of Two From Galilee
during the Christmas season, 1997.
Other productions by the Community
Choir included God For Us, God With
Us, and Emmanuel Has Come. The
choir is made up of singers from vari-
ous churches in the community.
The Zoonosis Control Program of
the Texas Department of Health in
Abilene, Texas, has released a rabies
notice, affecting Archer County. T wo
positive cases of rabies have docu-
mented in Megargel in the month of
November.
On November 1 st, a property owner
in Megargel observed a kitten run-
ning erratically, tail twitching, and
mewing. The kitten ran to its.mother
as if to nurse, and bit and held onto
her. The owner confined the kitten in
a carrier. Later that day, the kitten
died. It was taken to the veterinarian
to be submitted for rabies testing, and
was confirmed.
On November 28th, owners of a
horse in Megargel found the animal
acting sick. It would not eat, and was
pawing the ground. The horse was
taken to the veterinarians. Its condi-
tion deteriorated. The horse began
walking in circles, than laid down and
was unable to get up. The veterinarian
euthanitized the horse and sent it in
for rabies testing.
Both these cases were confirmed to
be a skunk strain of rabies. It is impor-
tant to vaccinate pets and animals for
rabies. There is a rabies vaccination
available for horses. Contact your vet-
erinarian. For more information about
rabies, contact the Zoonosis Control
Program at the Texas Department of
Health in Abilene at (915) 690-4430.

The Holliday area Angel Tree is
located again this year at R.T.'s in
Holliday. This tree helps meet the
needs of children in the northern part
of Archer County that might not have
as bright a Christmas as they deserve.
Thanks to the generous support of the
people of this area, the Angel Tree
has been a great blessing to many
families' over the last several years
that are struggling at this time of year.
If you would like to help in this
effort, just go by R.T.'s, choose an
angel from the tree, fill in the infor-
mation in the book by the tree, pur-
chase the gift listed on the angel, wrap
gift, and return the gift along with the
angel attached to the outside of the
gift to R.T.'s or City Hall in Holliday
by December 14. The Angel Tree
committee will collect the gifts and
distribute them to the families before
Christmas.
If you would like to join in this
project, but would rather not do the
actual shopping, you can make a do-
nation payable to the Angel Tree com-
mittee so that it can be used to pur-
chase gifts for children on the Angel
Tree. Remember the true spirit of
Christmas and help brighten the faces
of all these angels this holiday season.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
is set in a small town USA church
with a tradition of performing an an-
nual Christmas pageant. Through
some strange turns of event, this year's
pageant will be anything but tradi-
tional. When those unruly Herdman
kids secure all the lead roles, the
pageant is destined to be a disaster.
However, as the wonder of the Christ-
mas story washes over the Herdmans,
the program accidently becomes The
Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
All seats for the play are reserved.
Call the theatre ticket line at 723-
9037. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for
military and senior citizens, and $3
for children. Groups of 15 or more
can reserve seats for $5.50 each.
Showtimes are set for 7:30 p.m.
both nights with a matinee at 3:00
p.m. on Saturday.
Lara, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs.
Jim Clapp of Holliday, is an 8th grader
at Holliday Middle School.
Courthouse to
be closed
through midday
next Thursday
The Archer County Courthouse will
be closed from 11:45 a.m. until 1:30
p.m. on Thursday, December 14th.

meeting during that time.
