County creates Veterans
Service Office
The Commissioners Court of
Archer County, upon passing
the 2010 Fiscal Year budget,
authorized the reorganization of
a County Veteran Services
Officer for the benefit of Archer
County Veterans. Because of the
hardship of the county's veterans
having to travel out of county
for some services, County Judge
Gary Beesinger requested that
the Commissioners reinstate and
fund the office which had been
turned over to Wichita County
several years ago. Kelly
DeSautel, the Emergency
Management Coordinator for the
County was also given the title
of Veteran's Service Officer and
authorized to act as the point of
contact for Archer County
veterans.
The job of a Veteran Service
Officer is to assist local veterans
with resources and services for
many local, state and federal
benefits including compensation
and pension benefits, medical,
education and burial benefits,
VA insurance and loans,
requesting records, assisting
with placement in a VA nursing
home or hospital, checking
status of various claims pending

Author Jim Black scores again
by Barbara Phillips
One of my favorite authors,
Jim Black, has just released his
new book, Miracle on the
Gridiron, the story of the 1964
Archer City Wildcat team who
won the 1A
state football
championship
against all odds.
I am not a big
football fan, but
this is more than
just a story
about football.
It is a story
about heart,
courage,
discipline, and
grit. I found
myself drawn
into the
suspense and
action of the
games; I
laughed and I
reached for the
tissue box on
several
occasions. I
found it very difficult to put this
book down. As usual, it was an
easy read because of his
professed style: short chapters
and short sentence structure. But
the entire story line captured my
attention beginning with the first
chapter.
Author Jim Black grew up in
Archer City, Texas, a major
influence on his three novels
River Season. Tracks and now
Miracle on the Gridiron. He

hosting a "Flavors of Fall" bake
sale this Sunday, November 8,

Proceeds from this "One Day

purchasing a brick walkway
stone (memorial stone for the
walkway) in the newly reno-
stage plays to be performed
exclusively at the Royal Theater,
quite appropriate since they were
both about growing up in Archer
City. He wrote two more stage
plays, The Barber Shop
Dialogues, performed at the
Royal Theater in February of
2008, followed by his newest
play A Barber Shop Christmas
which opens with its first
performance at the Royal
Theater this month on November
19. These plays were inspired
by people and events in Archer
City, but anyone from a small
town can identify with the
characters. Those not from a
small town will be intrigued.

the Gridiron was written for the
people of Archer City and North
Texas and the 1964 Cinderella
Archer 1A football team who
won the state championship that
year under Coach Grady Graves.
Black's agent loved the book
and wanted to see it published,
but they both had creative
differences on how the book
should be written. His agent
wanted Black to condense the
manuscript to a single season
and concentrate on just a handful
of games. She just wanted the
"magical season."
"That would be really
disappointing to the players,
coaches, cheerleaders and the
people of Archer City who lived
it," Black stated.
He felt like the whole four
year story had to be told because
it was the whole four year
process from the time Grady
Graves walked into Archer City
in 1961 until the final game in
1964 that was important. Though
only a fourth of his new book
incorporates the first three
seasons, he knows they are
essential.
After two years of pouring his
heart and soul into the book, he
was not going to sell out for his
own profit. This story had to be
told the way he wrote it for his
hometown. Therefore, Black
turned down his agent on this
one and self published Miracle
on the Gridiron on his own terms.
The idea to write the book
came after Jim and his wife Lorie
had dinner with Mike and Judy
Stewart one night a couple of
years ago. Black said, "Mike
told a funny story about an
