LOVE ME TENDER. Johnny Fields was the first customer to purchase Elvis Presley
stamps from Archer City Postmaster Helen Serratt Friday. The stamps went on sale at noon
at post offices all across the country. Archer City’s supply was exhausted within thirty
minutes.

Karla Powell purchased Beall's Jewel-
ers in Archer City.
Todd Kimrey was named Head Coach
atWindthorstlSD.
Eddie Morris resigned as Principal of
Archer City High School to accept a
similar position in Gainsville, Texas.
C & A Longhorn Cattle Co. of Bowie
won the 6th Annual Archer County
Ranch Rodeo held in Archer City.
AUGUST
The first-ever Archer Scorcher Bike
tour with 100K, 50K, and 20K events
was sponsored by the Archer Chamber
of Commerce in Archer City.
Dr. Charles Winkles was named prin-
cipal of Archer City High School to
replace Eddie Morris.
Terry Wolf, former Athletic Director
and Head Football Coach at Archer
City, was named Head Baseball Coach
at Holliday High School.
Neal Meeks was appointed to the
Archer City ISD School Board to fill the
unexpired term of Allen Campbell.
Separate vehicle accidents took the
lives of Archer Countians Joyce Pri-
deaux Hornady and Scottie Goforth.
SEPTEMBER
L. D. "Butch" McLemore of Archer
City was killed in a one-vehicle acci-
dent near Windthorst.
Tommy and Elaine Baxter of Archer
City purchased the Archer Rower Shop
from Cheri Edge.
A massive manhunt in Northeast
Archer County resulted in the arrest of
an 18 year old man who was charged
with burglary of a habitation with intent
to commit sexual assault.
Jimmy Howells of Boy Scout Troop
126 in Archer City achieved the rank of
Eagle Scout.
Archer City hosted the West Texas
Firemens' Convention.
Ginger Fields was named Archer City
Homecoming Queen.
Thaggard's Foods opened its doors in
Archer City.
The 25th annual Archer County Jr.
Livestock Show and Sale brought over
$40,000 to its exhibitors.
The Tradin' Post was opened in
Archer City.
Holliday named Melissa Haggerty as
football sweetheart, Rhonda Crouch as
Band Sweetheart, and Sammi Gidney as
Round-Up Queen.
OCTOBER
Jim Madera became the owner of
Wildcat Car Wash in Archer City.
Amy Pennartz was named Windthorst
Homecoming Queen.
Berend Bros. Feed Store in Archer
City closed its doors after nearly 50
years of operation.
The Lakeside City VFD held its first-
ever Family Fun Day.
Todd Henry received the Gold Star
Award during the annual Archer County
4-H Awards banquet.
Archer County Commissioners voted
to remove the county from regulation
under the Texas Herbicide Law.
The Archer County Jail received State
Certification for the third straight year.
Roy Alsup retired as manager of the
local Texas Utilities Electric office after
32 years of service.
The Windthorst Trojanettes and Holli-
day Lady Eagles won district volleyball
crowns.
NOVEMBER
P. L. Pippin was re-elected as Archer
County Sheriff.
Archer City's Brandon Baxter quali-
fied for the State Cross Country Meet for
the third straight year.
Windthorst and Holliday won bi-dis-
trict, area, and region to advance to the
state volleyball tournament in Austin.
Windthorst won the state Champion-
ship in Class A volleyball.
Holliday took second place in the state
in Class AA volleyball.
Archer City approved the purchase of
a used ambulance to begin its own am-
bulance service.
Cody Wolf of Boy Scout Troop 201 in
Windthorst was awarded the rank of
Eagle Scout.
The Holliday Eagles won district and
bi-district crowns in football.
DECEMBER
Windthorst K. C.'s Served over 1,100
people at their annual sausage dinner.
The Archer Chamber of Commerce
held its 14th annual Christmas Parade.
Archer County Commissioners ap-
proved a contract with Lifeline Ambu-
lance Service for much of the rural areas
of the county with incorporated cities in
the county being held responsible for
providing their own service or contract-
ing for it.
Jo Beth Schreiber of Windthorst and
Julie Lovett of Holliday were named as
players in the State High School All-
Star volleyball game in Austin next
summer.
Jane Adams retired as County and
District Clerk after twenty-one years of
service.
Brandon Baxter of Archer City was
named to the All-State Cross Country
team for the third consecutive year.
Jane Johle was appointed County and
District Clerk to replace Jane Adams.
Archer County Commissioners ap-
proved a lease with Harmony Family
Services on the former Archer County
Hospital building.
The Archer City High School Football
Cheerleaders placed 37th in the nation
at the National Cheerleading Associa-
tion Competition in Dallas.
Archer City Ambulance Service re-
ceived its certification from the Texas
Department of Health.

Three County Girls
Named All-State
The Windthorst Trojanettes placed
two players on the first team of the Class
A All-S tate Volleyball team as named
last week by the Texas Sports Writers
Association while the Holliday Lady
Eagles placed one in Class AA.
Senior setter Amy Pennartz and senior
outside hitter April Schroeder received
the honors for their play forthe state

champion Trojanettes. Senior outside
hitter Julie Lovett was named to the AA
first team for her play for the runner-up
Lady Eagles.
Joining the Trojanettes in Class A were
Nicole Charlson (senior) of Round-Top
Carmine; Freda Wiliams (senior) of
Flatonia; Teka Martinez (freshman) of
Fort Davis; and Angie King (senior) of
Tilden McMullen County.
Others on the first unit of Class AA
were Amy Miller (senior) of Hutto;
Tomorrow Orsak (junior) and Crystal
Kubena (sophomore) of East Bernard;
Gracie Pavlicek (senior) of
Schulenburg; and Jan Scudder (senior)
ofPrairiland.

AMY PENNARTZ
Pennartz is the daughter of Allen
Pennartz and the late Frances Pen-
nartz. She served 97.63% for the
season, and led the team in set assists
with 320. She is a 3-year member of
the National Honor Society and has
been a Trojan cheerleader and honor
student for 3 years. She was named
All-District her junior year and the
District's Most Valuable Setter this
past season.
APRIL SCHROEDER
Schroeder is the daughter of Dennis
Schroeder and Viola Wheeler. She also
has been an honor student for 3 years.
She was named All-district and named
to the Texas Girls Coaches Associa-
tion All-State team her junior year.
She was selected All-Tournament at
the State tournament this year, as well
as being named the District's Most
Valuable Defensive Player.
AC ISD Extends
Superintendent's
Contract Through '96
The Board of Trustees of the Archer
City Independent School District ex-
tended the contract of Superintendent
Don Shearmire through the 1995-96
school year during their regular meet-
ing Monday night. The action came
after an executive session was held to
evaluate Shearmire's performance.
The Board unanimously rejected par-
ticipation in UIL girls volleyball for
1993-94. A group of students and par-
ents had requested that volleyball be
added for girls at the November Board
meeting.
The Board was also unanimous in
adopting the proposal of the student/
faculty cheerleading committee that
there should be one (1) varsity cheer-
leading squad composed of 10 members
for the upcoming 1993-94 school year.
The cheerleaders will perform as usual
during football season and perform in-
formality for other sports as possible.
In non-voting action, Superintendent
Shearmire presented TAAS test results
for 1992-93 for grades, 3, 7, and 11.
All three grades met or exceeded the
state average scale scores and per cent
of students meeting minimum expecta-
tions in writing, reading, and math.
Grade three was 1619 with 85% im
writing as compared to 1573 and 68%
for the state. Reading was 1702 and
100% to 1654 and 79%, and math was
1658 and 92% to 1667 and 84%. Grade
7 was 1807 and 93% to 1610 and 68% in
writing, 1587 and71%to 1493and51%
in reading, and 1593 and 74% to 1507
and 51% in math. Gradell was 1780
and 86% to 1672 and 83% in writing,
1685 and 80% to 1633 and 76% in
reading, and 1594 and 71% to 1559 and
60% in Math.

JULIE LOVETT
Lovett, the daughter of John and
Linda Lovett was named Miss HHS.
She is a member of the annual staff
and also participated in basketball and
track. She led the Lady Eagles with
6.4 kills and 4.2 blocks per game and
had a 78% passing average. She also
served 91% for the year. Julie was all-
district for three years including Most
Valuable Player this year. She was
named All-tournament at the State
tourney as well as at tournaments at
Wichita Falls Rider, Vernon Regional
Junior College and Most Valuable
Player at Newcastle.
NTWU Monthly
Meeting In Holliday
The monthly meeting of the North-
west Texas Water Utilities Associa-
tion will be held in Holliday at the
Archer County Activities Center
(Hwy 82 and Walnut) on January 21,
1993 at 7:30 p.m.
The program entitled Contract
Utility Operation will be brought by
Dennis Morrill of P.S.G. Co. There
will be a meal of fried catfish and all
the trimmings.

American
Revolution
The Windthorst Centennial Celebration was a major news story in
Archer County in!992.
CASSANDRA RALLS
Seniors from ten high schools in the
North Texas area received the Good
Citizen Award from the Daughters of
the American Revolution during a
luncheon Saturday at the Wichita Falls
Country Club.
The students were honored by the
Major Francis Grice Chapter with
award and pin presentations made by
Rebecca Huston, chairman of the DAR
Good Citizen Committee. She was
assisted by Regent Florence Ashby.
Qualities of good character emphasized
are Dependability, Service, Leadership,
Patriotism and Honor.
Honorees, their mothers and high
. school counselors were chaper guests.
Hostesses were Christolene Dickson,
Mary Nell Taylor and Salty Price.
Local award recipients were Cassan-
dra Ralls of Archer City and Lesli
Surles of Holliday. Cassie is the daugh-
ter of Malinda Ralls of Archer City
and Bob Ralls of Carrolton. She has

been involved in National Honor Soci-
ety, Student Council, debate, number
sense, basketball and tennis.
Leslie is the daughter of Ralph and
Debbie Surles. She has been involved
in FHA, FCA, Spirit Sisters, Spirit
Crew, National Honor Society and Stu-
dent Council as well as basketball and
track. She was also chosen Friendliest
and Most Courteous at HHS.
