Eagles topple Olney Cubs for sets MemoriJll services
regional quarterfinals crown
The Holliday Eagles continued their
quest for a state baseball crown last
week with back- to--buck victories over
district rival Olney. The wins came in
the best of three games regional
quarterfinals play in Graham and
Wichita Falls.
The Thursday 8-2 win came behind
the 4-hit pitching effort of Jason
Vardeman The Eagle ace upped his
season. record to 9-0 in going the
distance against the Cubs. Meanwhile
his teammates vvere belting out 12
base hits including two-hit outings
by Cody Leggett, Carlos Flores, Cody
Sanders, Brian Maenza and Brian
Wells.
The Eagles led just 3-2 going into
the top of the seventh inning when
the Big Red exploded for 5 runs.
Saturday the action moved to
Hoskins field in Wichita Falls. The
Eagles fell behind in the top of the
first inning as Olney's Adam Heard
belted a3-run home run. Holliday cut
the iead^*®*M in the bottom, .of the
frame, but that margin held up until
the bottom of the fifth. Steven Wells
opened the inning with a walk.
Leggett and Jason Bobbitt singled to
bring home a run. AfterFlores walked,
Vardeman and Sanders singled and
doubled to give Holliday a 5-3 ad-
vantage. That margin held up as
Steven Wells shut down the Cubs in
the final three stanzas to earn his 4th
win of the season, and move the
Book-signing by local
author to be held at
the Lonesome Dove
Au,thor Jim Black of Wichita Falls,
formerly of Archer City, will be on
hand at the Lonesome Dove Inn on
Saturday, June 3rd. He will be signing
copies tof his novel, There's a River
Down in Texas, from 10:00 a.m. until
2:00 p.m
Black's novel, his first, is about Texas
summer fun in the early '60's, and
roughly based on events that took place
when he was a young teen.
If you have a copy of the book and
would like it signed, or want to pur-
chase a copy, come by and visit with
Jim. Refreshments will be served.
Everyone is welcome.
Eagles mark to 18-2.
Bobbitt and Chad Peysen carried
the big sticks for Holliday with 3 for
4 (including a double) and 2 for 3
efforts respectively. Sanders added a
double, and Vardeman and Flores
had singles.
Holliday continues regional play
today (Thursday) when they take on
Abernathy at Moegel Field in Lub-
bock at 6:00 p.m. The Antelopes are
23-6 on the year after defeating
Lockney 18-2 Saturday. They de-
feated Holliday in the regional semi-
final round last year. "They have three
good pitchers," said Eagle Head
Coach Terry Wolf, "and outstanding
hitting." Abernathy has five players
hitting over 500.
The Eagles will counter with Jason
Vardeman and Steven Wells.
Vardeman at 9-0 for the year has an
earned run average of 1.26. Steven
Wells with 4 wins and no losses has
posted a 2.15 ERA. Four Eagles come
into today's game batting over 400.
Flores leads the offense at 460. Brian
Wells, Leggett, and Vardeman fol-
low with 436, 424, and 415 respec-
tively.
Game two of the three-game series
will be played at Hoskins Field in
Wichita Falls at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
The winner of the series will face
either Coahoma or Stanford in the
regional finals next week. The re-
gional champion will then advance to
the state tournament in Austin.
"BREAK-out" to hold
Spaghetti Lunch this
Sunday
The Faith Memorial Baptist Church
Youth, known as "BREAK-out" will
hold a Spaghetti Lunch Fund Raiser
Sunday, May 28, 2000 at noon. The
meal will be held at the church, dona-
tion only, and the menu includes spa-
ghetti w/meat balls, salad, garlic bread,
coffee and tea.
The youth are raising money for
summer camp, "Spiritual Retreat" this
summer, so while you enjoy this holi-
day weekend, come and enjoy a won-
derful meal and fellowship with the
Faith Memorial Baptist Church
Youth, "BREAK-out"!

The American Legion & Auxiliary
of Post #198, Archer City, has sched-
uled Memorial Day Services at the
Veterans Monument at the Court
House, and Archer City Cemetery for
Monday, May 29th, 2000, at 10:00
a.m.
The Ladies Auxiliary will serve cof-
fee, orange juice and do-nuts to mem-
bers of the Legion, and Auxiliary and
Sons of the Legion, at the Post Home
starting at 8:00 a.m. Squad Com-
mander, Joe Cameron will lead the
Trash collection,

In observance of Memorial Day,
IESI's offices, landfill and transfer
stations will be closed on Monday,
May 29th. Our office and facilities
will resume normal business hours on
Tuesday, May 30th. However, all trash
collections will be moved back one
day during the week of May 29 - June
2.
Collections normally made on Mon-
day will be made on Tuesday, Tues-
day collections will be made on
Wednesday, Wednesday collections
will be made on Thursday, Thursday
collections will be made on Friday,
Friday collections will be made on
Saturday. Should you have any ques-
tions concerning our schedule, please

Post Firing Squad of Legionnaires,
Sons of Legion and Auxiliary Mem-
bers to the Veterans Monument at the
Court House, and the Archer City
Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. Thereafter,
the firing squad and Sons of the Le-
gion will salute the dead Veterans at
the cemetery with their rifles and col-
ors, where 175 Veterans of all wars
have been laid to rest. The public is
invited to participate with the Ameri-
can Legion and Auxiliary and observe
Memorial Day on Monday, May 29th
at 10:00 a.m.
Splash Day
Monday at
Archer Pool
The Archer City pool will again be
the site of the annual Memorial Day
splash on Monday, May 29th. The
event win begin at noon with hot dogs
and cold drinks. Everyone is invited to
swim until 6 p.m.
Prices for the pool this year are the
same as last year: $1.50 per day for
adults and children alike, with a sea-
son pass of 20 sessions for $25.

flag should be displayed at half-
staff until noon only, then raised to
the top of the staff.

Ground breaking
at First Christian
Church
The First Christian Church in Ar-
cher City will break ground Sunday,
May 28, for a new fellowship hall. A
kitchen and two restrooms will be
included in this addition.
First Christian Church was founded
in 1891 as The Christian Church (Dis-
ciples of Christ). The present church
building was built in 1924.
The public is invited to the ground
breaking ceremony which will take
place at noon, following morning
worship. A meal will follow.

Mayfest fun!
There was lots of action at the Ar-
cher City Park last Saturday, during
the annual Mayfest. Lots of new ven-
dors made an appearance, including
the snake man, who managed to con-
vince Gary Beesinger to hold his boa
(top right)! The little pitcher below
Jack Parkey (left) accepts the keys from Lanny Parr, of Parr
Chevrolet, to the 2000 Chevy S-10 pickup he won Saturday night at the
Mayfest Madness drawing. Chamber of Commerce officials were very
surprised when Mr. Parkey presented a check from the Parkey and
Herring families for $1,500 to them in return!
