For State Honors.

Dean Brunson. These young people qualified as State contestants in Region League meet
held April 24th, at Kilgore. Gloria Stilley placed first in senior girl declamation; Lawrence
Lilly first in 440-yard dash; Sarah Harrison, second place in journalism. The mile-relay
team consisting of Lawrence Lilly, Wendell Amos, Billy Kay Magness and Barkley Bowlin,
placed second in the region and thus qualified for state competition. Boby Dean Brunson
is an alternate. The young contestants will be accompanied by Mrs. D. P. Billingsley,
coach of declamation and sponsor of the school paper, and Douglas Samford, track coach.

to Make 3 in Contest
Austin, April 30.—Lt. Gov.
Ben Ramsey Friday formally
filed for re-election with state
Democratic headquarters, and
promised to "give the people
the services they need and re-
quire at the least possible
cost.”
The San Augustine lawmak-
er also pledged himself to "op-
erate the government econom-
ically and efficiently.” Two
other candidates have an-
nounced for the office—Austin
businessman C. T. Johnson,
and George Hinston of Mineo-
la, a member of the Texas
House of Representatives.
Ramsey, who has served
two terms as lieutenant gover-
nor, outlined a seven-point
platform covering:

Hearing On
Garrison Water Plan
Set May 10
Nacogdoches, May 4.—
Hearing on the possibility of
creating a fresh water district
in the area included by the
Garrison Independent School
District will be held as part of
the regular May meeting of
the Nacogdoches County Com-
missioners Court May 10 in
Nacogdoches.
The hearing has been set
for 1 o’clock in the afternoon
at the courthouse, following
the regular business session of
the court that morning, ex-
plained Grady Fuller, county
judge.
The hearing was set after a
petition signed by residents of
the area was filed with the
court at the April meeting.
Following the hearing, the
court will either approve or
disapprove the creation of a
water district, and an election
will be planned if the idea is
approved.
In the election, voters of the
district will say whether they
desire a water district or not.
If their decision is favorable,
then the legal formation of
the district can go forward
and plans for water detention
and distribution made.

Only daughters of parents ac-
tively engaged in commercial
broiler production are eligible
for the contest. They must be
single and between the age of
15 and 21.
Miss Helen McCauley of
Timpson, Shelby County Broil-
er Queen, will compete against
county queens from all over
the state at the coronation
ceremonies.
Finals of the contest and
the coronation of the queen
will be held in the Shelby
County court house on the
night of May 13. A reception
for the queen and her court
will follow coronation cere-
monies.
. The young lady receiving
the honor of Queen of the Tex-
as Broiler Industry will reign
until the Chicken of Tomorrow
Show in 1955. She will offi-
cially represent the industry
at statewide fairs, shows, con-
tests and meetings at which
the broiler industry is one of
the major interests. She will
receive for herself a cash
award of 3100. Contestants
placing second and third will
each receive a trophy. All con-
testants in the finals will be-
come duchess in the Queen’s
court for the year to follow.
The girls will be guests of
the City of Center, host to the
1954 Texas Chicken of Tomor-
row Show which promises to
be a record-breaking event
with more than 5000 cham-
pionship type birds competing.
Various topics pertaining to
community development came
up for discussion at the regular
meeting of the Chamber of
Commerce Monday night. Dr.
J. E. Williams, vice president,
presided in the absence of
President E. E. Phelps, who
was out of town on business.
Reports were made by mem-
bers of the Industrial Commit-
tee giving evidence that they
are on the job to help bring in-
dustries into this area.
Speaking for the agricultur-
al committee, \V. F. Corry stat-
ed that the outlook for a good-
sized cucumber and tomato
crop was very encouraging.
Exploration tests are being
made in this area to determine
the extent and possibilities of
| lignite, and reports by Rex
Brinson and W. F. Corry were
to the effect that they are busy
seeking to obtain this inform-
ation.

president of the Future Farm-
ers of America for the year
1954-55 in a meeting in the
auditorium Monday morning,
May 3.
