A THOUGHT FOR
TODAY
The generous who is
always just, and the
just who is always gen-
erous may unannounced
approach the throne of
heaven.—Lavater.
A Choice of Headline*
Buy War Bonds—The Key

Buy War Bonds and Stamps.
Wouldn’t it make a pretty
headline in Yank or the Stars
& Stripes?—
“War bend drive falls
short-’’
It is not hard to imagine the
picturesque language soch
news would evoke from a sol-
dier in Italy or New Guinea,
sweating and dirty, eating
cold rations from cans, hag-
gard and half numb from fati-
gue and danger and the ugly
facta of battle. Or the sinking
feeling that would assail himi
at - the thought that, while he 1
pursued this desperate and ob- j
scene existence, the people in
their easy chairs back home
were not concerned enough to1
open their pocketbooks. ;
Especially when, as the sol- MUmO* Sunday and
dier knows, we are not being, y ~......J
asked to give anything to aay-
promptly smashed by British
troops.
■ This dislodged the last an-
chor of the Sele-Colore salient
which for three days and
nights had been subjected to
one of the greatest combined
bombardments ever delivered
simultaneously from land, sea
and air.
Survivors of the German
a
mobile
British unit overtook them
and, assisted by. an aerial and
artillery barrage, mowed them
down almost to the last man,
front reports said. What had
been for days an impenetrable
German strong point was now
a graveyard of smoking Mark
IV and Mark VI tanks, artil-
lery, trucks and fallen Nasis.
A few Nasis managed to es-
cape the -Sele-Colore trap and
join long columns of enemy
tanks, self-propelled artillery
and troop carriers which were
withdrawing to the north,
back of Salerno line, under
merciless pounding by Allied
planes.

that will prove very useful in

On the other hand, a head-
line like “War bond goal far
oversubscribed” might give a
little psychological lift, just
when they need it, to those
guys who are going through
hell for the rest of us.
