Sbelby-Panola Soil
Conservation News
Ponds constructed prior to
September rains have filled
with water. Many fanners who
bad ponds dug last year have
recently received fish from the
-ate hatchery to put in their
ponds.
Brown Chandler at Shelby-
ville reports having oats up to
a stand and crimson clover
coming up from natural re-
seeding.
Dan Rhodes in Buena Vista
has oats up to a stand. They
were planted this fall. He ex-
pects to get early grazing from
them.
Bruce Dalby and Bobby Lee
have planted oats for winter
grazing. Lee included vetch
with his oats for soil improv-
ing.
Barfield Burrows has done
an excellent job of needing his
dam and sodding the spillway.
He covered it with broiler
manure and planted bermuda
seed on the dam, but sod was
placed in the spillway. Cattle
were fenced off the structure
to prevent damage to it
William Richards planted
about two acres of Weeping
Lovegraas last summer on
some sandy land that was
mostly growing grassbms.
Lovegrass made good growth
and is ready fbr fall and win-
ter grazing.
Recent field checks were
made by Soil Conservation Ser-
vice personnel to see what
caused pine seedlings to die
this summer. Improper plant-
ing was found to be one factor
that could be remedied by
more careful planting. Perfec-
tion in planting is practically
impossible, but where pine
seedling roots were turned up
or at a right angle, the seed-
lings 'died.
Competition from other
vegetation ranks high as a
cause of failure during first
growing season when moisture
gets scarce.
Cut ants and other insects
take their toll; also, pocket
gophers.
Survival as a whole looks
good for pines planted in the
Shelby-Panola District last
season. This makes two years
in succession where a stand
baa survived in most plantings.
Those planted deep, and
those in middle buster furrows,
showed higher percentage sur-
vival during dry; weather.
District supervisors are ex-
pecting the coming winter to
be favorable for getting an
early start planting pires—at
least insofar as moisture is
concerned. With the present
high moisture content, soils
should be ready in that respect.
If your planting site needs
any preparation before setting
out the pines, it is time to get
it in shape. If you are in doubt
what to do with it, or if it
needs anything done at all, see
your local ACS technician,
Texas Forest Service forester,
or ASC office field man for
advice.
