cities is not being done in re-
venge but as a military neces-
sity. Before we can defeat the
Nasis on the military fronts,
where they are still strong, we
must farther cripple their war
industries, particularly those
building planes and subma-
rines. The advantages of such
bombings already are being
felt on the Atlantic, on the
Russian front and in the air
over western Europe. Bomb-
ings on an even heavier scale
may save many lives by hast-
ening the day of victory. If
and when the Nazis have had
enough, they know how to end
the bombings they started—by
unconditional surrender.

Germans who ghurted over
the bombing of Warsaw, Rot-
terdam, London, Plymouth
and Coventry are learning
how it feels to b« on the re-
ceiving end. Horror-stricken
refugees from Hamburg are
spreading over Germany
storms of the devastation and
tenor that follow the raids of
British and American bomb-
ers. Even Berlin is having its
children and old -people eva-
cuated, and unofficial reports
say that many others are flee-
ing the city in panic. Allied
leaflets dropped there a week
ago reminded residents that!
Berlin is on the list of doomed j
cities.

A Scotsman was strolling
along the quay one day, when
his dog stopped beside a bas-
ketfull of live lobsters. In-
stantly one of the lobeters
snapped its claws on the dog’s
tail, and the surprised collie
dashed off down the street,
yelping with pain.
The fishmonger for a mo-
ment was speechless with in-
dignation ; then, turning to his
prospective customer, he
bawled: "Mon, mon, whustle
to yer dog; whustle to yer
dog,”
"Hoot, mon," returned the
other oomplacently, “whustle
to yer lobster.”—Coastal Cat-

For Victory: Buy Bonds?
Berlin scores of times, but not
with anything like the crush-
ing blows that were struck on
Hamburg. Berlin i= within
the range of our big daylight
bombers based in England.
Though Berlin is farther than
Hamburg from British bases,
it could be wrecked as effec-
tively, given a little more time.
Bomber losses might be heav-
ier, but the gain might be
worth the price if it shortened
the war. The stampede out of
Berlin indicates that the Ger-
mans there realize their dan-
ger.
Some reports speculate that
the Nazis might move their
governmental agencies to an-
other seat and declare Berlin
an open city. Such a move
would lay Berlin open to un-
opposed occupation by air-
borne Allied.troopa. One* in
control of Berlin, these troops
might fan oat in all directions.
The difficulty the Nazis would
have in keeping the Germans
in line with Berths in Allied
hands can easily be imagined.
With the Luftwaffe as crip-
pled as it is, German resist-
ance might crumble quickly.
