EXPENDITURES
Washington—Texas ranks
32nd among 50 states in expen-
ditures per pupil in public
schools.
New York leads with 9585
per pupil, or an 87.8 per cent
increase in outlay per pupil
in the last 10 years, followed
by Alaska with 9620 per pupil,
a 54.7 per cent gain the past
10 years.
Texas spent an average of
$303 per pupil, an increase of
81.6 per cent the past 10 years.
These, and other figures
were released today in an an-
nual estimate compiled by the
National Education Assn.
Other high ranking states
and territories showed: New
Jersey, 9463; Wyoming, 9436;
District of Columbia, 9435;
Delaware, $420; Oregon, $418;
Illinois, $410; Nevada, $410;
California, $390; and New
! Mexico, $390.
! Alabama was in last place
{with an outlay of $164 per
child. Just above Alabama
came Mississippi, $181, and
Arkansas $201.
Oklahoma led in the percent-
age of elementary school teach,
ers who have had four or more
years of college training, with
99.6 per cent of its tec hers in
that category. - Arizona was
next with 98.4 per cent; fol-
lowed by Florida, 97.8, New
Mexico, 96 and Texas 95.6.
In total public school enroll-
ment, California led with 4,-
035,000 children followed by
New York with 2,640,000.
Texas was third with 1,955,-
425; Pennsylvania fourth with
1,915,051, and Ohio fifth with
1,825,000.
