Russian doctor who successful-
ly transplanted dogs’ head*
now toe planted hearts in two
deg*. He hopes to attach a heart
to a toman in an experiment
before the end of to* year.
Dr. Valadimir Demikhov, an
experimental specialist in Mos-
cow’* Bret medical institute
told newsmen today of an *X'
intent conducted two week*
ago on twp. dog*.
Ho took th* hearts from two
dogs and planted them inside
of each of two other dog*. The
dog* were brought out, oach
with a patch oa the loft side
when, Demikhov said, the new
hearts had been attached and
were functioning inside effec
tively.
Demikhov said the result was
that it took half the work load
off th* original heart Ho do-
eland the experiment’s value
would be to permit the graft-
ing of a supplemental heart an
a human being eo aa to lower
the tends on the original heart
during an operation or a pro-
longed serious illness.
At th* end of tho interview
ho said: “I hope to liv* until it
is poaaibl* to replace human
hearts.”
Th* 48-year-eld Demikhov
has already transplanted on
other dogs toad* which func-
tioned ia many respects except
that they could not eat.
Deminkhov said he also ex-
pects in the near future toj
transplant a lag to a woman]
who lost one recently in a
train accident.
He said he hopes to perform
th* operation sometime within
th* next 8 months.
He had already grafted a
lag to a dog and it was work-
ing relatively well, he said, un-
til the leg was accidentally
burned under X-ray, and th*
limb died.

Study Urged
By Specialist
Philedolpilia, Oct. 26 IB—A
nationally-known heart special-
ist, Dr. Onrta* Peg* of Cleve-
land, mid today the only way
to resolve the controversy over
what causes heart attacks is
tq put e lot of people on a spe-
cial diet. Ha suggested 10,090
people be given foods designed
to keep down cholesterol in the
blood. Such a diet would have
to be followed for several years
before any conclusions can be
drawn.
Many doctor* believe that
an abnormal level of choles-
terol Is a key factor in the nar-
rowing of arteries which can
cause heart attacks. Other doc-
tors argue just as strongly that
there is no proof that choles-
terol plays such a. role.

The only way to rsnln Bt ,
controversy, he mid, is to place
enough people on n diet spec-
ifically designed to keep down
the blood’s concentration of
cholesterol. In the diet, foods
high to animal fat would be
substituted for food* high In

Dr. Page stressed that any
such diet must first be prov-
