USO RENDERS A
GREAT SERVICE
A boy in nniform on a street
corner, lacking companion-
ship, wondering what to do
with himself—how to spend
this one free night away from
camp.
Mothers, wives, sweethearts,
stranded in strange places,
seeking communication with
their soldiers in camp.
Young men and women with
jobs helping to build our bul-
warks of war, but uprooted
from their homes, ill-housed,
with nothing to do when the
day’s work is over.
These are just three of the
many situations that have dis-
rupted normal living condi-
tions in America today.
Into this situation has come
the USO, a member of the Na-
tional War fund, with leader-
ship and resources tftade pos-
sible by the generous contribu-
tions of Americans across the
nation, said W. W. Jackson,
Region Ter Executive. That it
has fulfilled the hopes that
were held for its success and
has met the situations that
exist is testified to by the fact
that, in Texas alone, over 32,-
000,000 visits will be made to
USO club houses during 1943,
he said.
NOVEMBER 7-13 TEXAS
STATE GUARD WEEK
When most of us go home
of an evening to a leisurely
dinner, the comfort of our easy
chair by the radio to rest front
the strenuous work imposed
by labor shortages and war-
time rush, groups of Texans
in communities ail over the
state are rushing home to
hastily grab a bite to eat and
shed their civilian clothes and
don another suit of work
clothes—the uniform of the
Texas State Guard.
For almost three years,
these men have given their
evenings, their week-ends and
even their vacations to the
task of fitting themselves to
serve our state in times of em-
ergency. It'is encouraging
that we have in our midst a
group of men who are among
the first to sense a threat to
our peace and security and
who, eighteen months before
Pearl Harbor, began to ready
a state military force, and
who refuse to relax their vigil-
ance despite the optimistic
news from the fighting fronts,
and who will continue to do so
until the threat that'still exists
is vanquished.
In recognition of their ac-
complishments, Governor
Stevenson has proclaimed the
week of November 7-13 as
Texas State Guard Week, and
has called upon the citizen-
ship of the state to do honor to
these civilian soldiers who
have performed their tasks so
capably.
It is fitting that proper rec-
ognition he given these volun-
teer guardians whose only-
pay is the satisfaction of serv-
ing. We join Texas this week
in saluting our Texas State
Guard.
