Describing Color to Blind
Is Difficult Task, Man
With Restored Sight, Says
Fort Worth, Texas. (UP)—
George W. Campbell, whose
sight was destored after 18
years of blindness, believed to-
day the most difficult task in
the world was describing the
color to the blind.
The 21-year-old youth,
whose “glory of seeing” for
the last three years made him
"grateful for having been
blind,” described the vividness
•of colors as he first saw them
and outlined the system he has
devised for the description of
colors to blind persons.
He will describe color to the
blind through use of their
other senses—rust color as
“the glow of a ’fire,” blue as a
“cooling drink.”
Campbell was born in Law-
ton, Okla., with the lenses of
his eyes opaque doe to an at-
tack of Influenza which, his
mother suffered in the nation-
al epidemic of 1918. Three
years ago Oklahoma City doc-
tors removed the natural lenses
and gave him glasses which
serve in their place. “A new-
born boy of 18,” as he describ-
ed himself, he learned to see.
Now a resident of Amarillo,

Campbell is on a lecture tour
and plans to make Fort Worth
his headquarters for several
weeks. This week he launch-
ed a thrice-weekly radio pro-
gram devoted to the “Philoso-
phy of Blindness.”
In his lectures he relates
how he received, his education
in public schools and college—
not by the. use of Braille—but
by developing his memory.
“I learned to, remember
verbatim long chapters read
me only once, so that I could
repeat them months later with-
out missing a word,’’ he said.
“Now I can’t do it to save me,
for sight has brought distrac-
tions, and only by utmost con-
centration can a person accom-
plish such feats of memory."
