Doctors Ask For
Stricter Controb On
Automobile Drivers
Austin — A highway bill
board illustrating the bloody,
crumpled body of an automo-
bile accident victim may have
little effect on a holiday driver.
But, would he be more cauti-
ous if threatened with loss of
his driver’s license?
Two doctors, one from Wi-
chita Falls and one from De-
troit writing in the June issue
of the Texas State Journal of
Medicine, plead for stricter
controls on all drivers.
Dr. Donald N. Sweeney, Jr.,
of Detroit, whose article, "A
Privilege—Not a Right” was
first published in toe Detroit
Medical News, calls on physi-
cians to convince their patients
who are not qualified to drive
to give up the privilege.
"Improper organic defects or
emotional disturbances which
prevent the proper manage-
ment of a motor vehicle should
be reported,” Dr. Sweeny de-
clares. "These medical aspects
of traffic safety are funda
mentally the responsibility of
the medical profession. In this
area, there can be no regard
for ‘hardship eases.’ You may
be the next accident victim.
Survival depends on a driver
who ia mentally alert, to good
condition and emotionally
aware ai the dangerous task
as is performed.”
