Shelby is one of the original
counties, and much of it* his-
tory will be lost because it was
never written.
There are many of you who
can be of great help in writing
the history of Shelby County.
Please do not wnit too long.
Contact one of these three
people in Center, Tnxaa: Mr.
Norris O'Banion, Mrs. Mattie
Dellinger, or Mrs. Kate Kim
bro.
For many months I have bean
doing research and collecting
data relative to the early hi*
tory of the McCeUand Com-
munity. This was net only «*>
home community, it was named
for William "Bill” MeCeilaad,
the grandfather of my step-
mother, Katie Lovell Nix. Mbs
Katie, as we called bar, waa
named for her aunt Katie Mi-
dland, one of William "801”
McCelland’s daughters.
This search for information
baa led me to many of the
people of that community, and
there are many more whom I
intend to see on week-ends ss
time permits.
I have talked with Mrs. Ains-
ley Runnels, Mr. George Camp-
bell, Bro. Frank Johnson, Mrs.
Leeilie Epps, Mm. N. B. Evans.
Bro. Willie Adams, Mm. Luario
Adams, Mr. George Kllleti, Mr.

Mr. Burt Morrison’s grand-
father.
Dr. Hurst stated that he
knew A. C. White, the Confed-
erate soldier who married
Katie McCeUand, '‘BUI” Me-
Celland’s daughter. They lived
in this community and Dr.
Hurst mid A.C. White was a
loyal member of the Shelby-
villa Masonic Lodge, and that
shout 1890 Mr. White and his
wife Katie always went to
Shelbyville on Maeonic moot
ing nights so that he could at
tend lodge.
His son was Tom White, also
n Mason and member of the
Shelbyville Lodge.
W. L. White, now living at
McCeUand still haa A. C.
While’s Testament (Bible)
which that Confederate soldier
carried through the Civil War.
The Testament waa printed in
1867 in New York by the
American Bible Society.
A. C. White had signed his
name in it in several places,
and on one ehoet he had writ-
ten a notation, none of which
could bo read except the data
at tha bottom: “March IB,
1884". Tne paper above the
date was rotten, but it is sup-
posed to have been an account
of a battle in the Mils of Ten-
nessee, for he had told of fight-
ing there and living for three

He also had a horn made for
calling "hounds”. He said that
this horn also belonged to Bill
McCeUand. It had a brass band
around the large end. these
words were cut or filed on the
horn: ”W. M. - May 7, U77".
He had a half-dime dated
1889, and a knife which he mid
was a "tooth-pick dagger” and
he thought it, too, belonged to
Bill McCeUand. Oi the blade
was incribed these words:
“Southern Richardson Shef-
field England”.
I was very much interested
in tha bit of history, since it ad-
ded to the collection I am
gathering.
I wrote this article with a
hope that someone would read
It who knows something of the
history of McCeUand Com-
munity between the years of
___to 1886. I would grastly
appreciate hearing from any-
one who doea have any such
knowledge.
