the state—possibly longer than
anyone else in the nation.
When landowners in Nacog-
doches and Bask counties vot-
ed into existence the state's
Hist soil conservation dsrtrict
on April 80, 1940, Latimer was
elected to the original board
of supervisors. At the first ro-
ganizatfonal meeting, his fel-
low supervisors selected him
as their chairman and he dace
has served in that capacity con-
tinuously—a period of maw
than 88 years.
Unofficially, Latimer’s ser-
vice dates back even farther,
Lynn Pittard, Extension soil and
water conservation specialhd,
points out. The dedicated con-
. aervatknrist made many trips
to Austin at'his own expense,
working tirelessly for the dis-
trict movement prior to pass-
age of enabling legislation in
1939.
Latimer provided valuable
leadership in the orginazation
of both State and National As-
sociations of Soil Conservation
District Supervisors, and in
1957 he was suceasfnl in
cani zing the Deep East Texas
Association. These organisa-
tions, Pittard said, have enabl-
ed people at all levels to pre-
sent a united front hi the pro-
motion of needed soil, water
and plant conservation
purrs across the nation.
