SOCIAL SECURITY 26
YEARS OLD THIS MONTH
Aug. 14, twenty-five years
after the original Social Se-
curity Act became law, over
14 million men, women, and
children are receiving monthly
old-age, survivors, and disabili-
ty insurance benefit checks to-
talling $900 million a month.
Marking the twenty-fifth
anniversary of the signing of
the original Social Security Art
by President Roosevelt on Au-
gust 14, 1935, L. R. James, dis-
trict manager of the Lufkin so-
cial security office noted that
25 years ago about half cf al'
persons aged 65 or over were
mainly or wholly dependent on
relatives and friends. Today,
Proposed CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
NUMBER FOUR ON THE BALLOT_
over 72 percent of a much larg-
er aged population are either
drawing old-age and survi /ors
insurance benefits:, or will be
eligible to draw them when
the worker retires.
Originally designed to pro-
vide only old-age insurance
benefits for workers in com-
merce and industry, these pro-
visions of the social security
program have been expanded
and improved over the years.
About 9 out of 10 workers in
the United States, almost the
entire gainfully employed pop-
ulation, work in employment
or self-employment covered by
social security.
Through this work, they are
building protection for them-
selves and their dependents in
their old-age, and for their
families in case of their death.
Under amendments to the
law. enacted in 1954, 1950
and 1958, they are also earn-
ing protection for themselves
and families in the event of
their permanent and total dis-
ability.
