as Motor Patrol, says that it is
the bystander who is in most
danger in political shot ex-
changes, as well as in camera
and revolver battles. Phares
3ays. Albert Sidney Johnson,
chairman of the Public Safety
Commission, had Tom Hick-
man appointed Senior Banger,
which displeased Governor All-
red, and the issue “whirled
around the governor's office
and around Commissioner
Johnson, with me more or less
as a bystander and onlooker,”
“I was a mere incident and
onlooker in the picture,” says
the memoirs of the former
Safety Director.
Capt. J. W. McCormick, who
succeeded Hickman, went over
Phares’ head to the governor,
Phares relates, and while Mc-
Cormick was Senior Ranger
Captain, control of the Rangers
was taken entirely from the
acting director’s hands.
The Department of Public
Safety, originated for the pur-
pose of keeping the Texas
Highway Patrol and Rangers
out of politics, Phares says,
was involved in a "luxuriant
profusion of politics” with
himself “a grief-stricken vic-
tim and bystander.”

Falacious Beliefs
Perhaps no physician is bet-
ter adapted to discuss the er-
roneous beliefs to which the
majority of the laymen sub-
scribe than Dr. Tom A. Wil-
liams, of Washington, D. C.—
a friend of mine for years and
a most experienced doctor.
In a recent talk with him he
set forth the popular miscon-
ceptions about the human
body and they are so worth
while and so absolutely true
Insomnia never leads to in-
sanity. One does not need to
plan his diet with great care
neither is a variety of food eat-
en at the same time harmful.
Cucumbers and milk; oranges
and milk, whiskey and oysters,
acids and milk are not in the
least incompatible and do not
cause sour stomach, neither
are they causes for indiges-
tion. i
The Age of Comforts
There is nothing so strenu-
ous about modern life as to
break down our nerves, for we
are today living in an age of
thousands of comforts our
forefathers never dreamed of.
Constipation is not the base of
all physical ailments, and it
positively is not the result of
eating the wrong kinds of food.
Certain foods, such as fresh
vegetables, and special fruits,
help in overcoming the condi-
tion but there are other factors
much more important which
bring about this ailment. One’s
mind has much to do with the
physical condition of every
individual. Dr. Billings men-
tions a case of an army officer
who suffered a slight wound,
which should not have incon-
venienced him. He was un-
usually robust, strong, healthy
but declared he knew he
would die on the fourth day as
a result of this injury, which
he did. An autopsy showed
that every organ of his body
was exceptionally healthful
and that the wound could not
possibly have caused his death,
but he died nevertheless, be-
cause of a mere mental sug-
gestion.
