nations Is at the present moment. If
every person who has a right to voice
and express an opinion on the sub-
ject does not, then we might well
expect World War III to follow as
surely as World War II followed
World War I.
Once victory is won It will be all
too easy to overlook and more likely
to forget th3 lessons we should have
learned during the last 25 years. It
will be the most natural human act
in the world to say "thank God it Is
over" and in saying it believe we
have fulfilled all our responsibilities.
We shall have won the war, wo shall
want to forget war and w» shall hope
with all our hearts that our country
shall never be involved in another.
But we shan’t prevent those fu-
ture wars if we allow time to lull
our thoughts into a sense of unas-
sailable security as we did after the
last war. So on this anniversary,
let us not forget that our country Is
presently engaged in the mightiet
and costliest struggle it has yet un-
dertaken because the correct mea-
sures were not taken after the last
war, Let us vow that it will never
happen again but in so doing be pre-
pared to see that It doss not.
By that it is not meant that each
of us should personally go to Japan
or Germany when the war is over
and see that every axis individual
receives the treatment he so justly
deserves.
But we should never forget as we
are likely to with the passing of years
that each one of thosa individuals
is just as responsible for this war
and the killing of untold numbers of
our boys, as their leaders who or-
dered those killings.
Let’s never allow ourselves to for-
get that the "good, honest German"
whom we are likely to take pity on
in years to come is today making un-
believeable sacrifices and working
with tireless effort so the German
army can keep in the field for the
sole purpose of killing as many Am-
ericans as is possible.
Let's never allow ourselves to
make the same mistakes we have
made during the last 25 years. This,
and every November 11 should serve
as continual reminders.
In speaking of the guarantees we
should have at the conclusion of this
war to prevent all future conflicts,
the most outstanding question in the
minds of everyone today still is “haw
long is the war going to last?”
Last week, in the company of At-
torney Lawrence L Bruhl, I had the
opportunity of asking that very ques-
tion of Governor Coke R. Stevenson
[ in Austin. While the governor would
not permit me to quote his studied
predictions, 1 do not believe it is a
| violation of any confidence to say
that the chief state executive takes I
a most optimistic view, more optimis-
tic than this coliAnn has ever as-
sumed.
