Honeycutt pleased
with team’s effort
“I think the kids played
hard,” said Hondo Head
Coach Mike Honeycutt after
the Owls’ quarter-final loss
to Sweeny. "We had oppor-
tunities to win, and weren’t
able to capitalize, but we
went down swingin’.”
“Sweeny just had a great
defense and great effort,” he
continued. The Owls played
well defensively, stopping
Sweeny’s ground game for
mo6t of the night, and
holding the Bulldogs star
running back, Duane
Woodard to just 20 yards
rushing.
Hondo also tried the guard
reverse one more time, with
Chris Oefinger doing the
honors, but Sweeny read it,
and stopped the play for no
gain.
Another unusual forma-
tion occurred twice, when
the Owls lined up with what
appeared to be only three
men on the line of scrim-
mage. However, the line was
just split into three parts,
with the cento- and guards
near the ball, and the tackles
split wide with the tight
ends. The two halfbacks
were lined up near the
sidelines behind the tight
ends. So really, what you
have, is a T-formation - just
spread across the field -
with a double-tight end set.
Anyway, the formation
didn’t have any particular
tffect on Sweeny, as the
Bulldogs stopped it both
times, once on the two-point
conversion.
EH The Owl mentor was
'-'pleased with the season as a
whole. “We played really
hard, and always with a lot
of enthusiasm,” he said.
There had to be a lot of
enthusiasm for a team that
came from behind seven
times to win.
“Defensively, we playCd
well all year, thanks to
Coach Porter and Coach
Carroll,” he added.
Next year, the Owls will
have the basis for another
good team. Hondo will
return several players with
quite a bit of experience,
including Greg Lutz, Arturo
Barrios, Jeff Rochat, Lance
Brucks, and Chad Hayes on
offense.
The Big Blue defense will
also return Robbie Graff and
Luis Cardenas, in addition to
several players already
mentioned.
Albert Contreras will be
the leading candidate for
quarterback, after seeing a
moderate amount of action
in the ’83 season, and Mike
Hernandez will also play a
lot more after being a
standout on the special
teams.
Coach Honeycutt’s main
area of concern will be in
rebuilding the offensive and
defensive lines, which are
both losing a lot of starters.
Also a factor in the 1984
season is the schedule, which
is probably the toughest in
the state.
The Owls will take on six
teams during the regular
season which made the
playoffs in 83: Fredericks-
burg, Uvalde, Boerne,
Carrizo Springs, and
Bandera in non-district, and
Medina Valley in district.
Not to mention the rest of
the schedule including

GETTING CLOSE... to the
endzone is Lance Brucks
(30), who is brought down at
the Sweeny ia-yard Use.
The Owls only trailed by a
point at the time, but were
unable to punch it in.
Sweeny won the state
quarter-final meeting, 14-6.
Devine, Poteet, Somerset,
and Cotulla.
Schools in Class AAA are
not allowed to hold spring
training (only AAAAA
schools can do that), so the
Owls’ coaching staff will
hold, as always, an off-
season strength and condi-
tioning program.
Meanwhile, Hondo sports
fans can bide their time by
supporting the Owl basket-
ball, track, and baseball
teams. But, if you just can’t
live without football, relax.
Football season is only 276
days away.
