War bride, groom return to Hondo
to celebrate 50th anniversary
By Frances Guinn
Anvil Herald Editor
, Saturday, April 2,1994 was very
special for Charles and Lillian
Bursey of Waynesville, Ohio. It was
their 50th wedding anniversary and,
ip celebrate, they came back to
Hondo to where they were married
and lived their first year together.
- "Wedrovel550milestogethere,'’
Charles said.
' They drove around town, looking
for landmarks, they said, but things
had changed considerably and many
things they remembered were not to
be found. Charles said the Raye
Theatre building hadn't changed and
brought back memories, but the base
was a skeleton of what it had been.
They hadn't found any of the three
places they had lived.
:■ Even so, "It is nice to come down
and see things again," Charles said.
- The Burseys stopped at Flightline
Cafe for lunch and "were treated like
royalty," they said, after Evelyn
Herrmann and customers in the res-
taurant learned of their special story.
In 1942, Charles was stationed at
Hondo Air Base as an aircraft me-
chanic. He remained through 1944.
They had made their wedding
plans, but the 23-year-old prospec-
tive groom couldn't go home to get
married. So, Lillian packed her wed-
ding dress and other clothes and
shipped them some 30 days in ad-
vance of her planned arrival here.
As a 19-year-old not long out of
high school, Lillian made the two-
day train trip alone. It was her first.
The wedding was set for Saturday
evening and she arrived on Friday.
But, upon arrival, she found that her
clothes had still not reached Hondo.
Lillian and Charles Bursey visited at Flightline Cafe Saturday.
They learned her trunk was in San
Antonio and would arrive here Sun-
day morning.
They asked the First Baptist
Church minister to postpone the
wedding until the following day.
Sunday evening, after worship
services, the minister invited the
congregation to stay for the wedding
and "almost everyone did,” she said.
Although Charles and Lillian had
no family members here, they had a
building full of well-wishers at their
wedding.A friend and his wife stood
as their attendants.
There was no reception, no wed-
ding pictures. Her mother took pic-
tures when they went home later on
furlough.
After the service, they took the last
bus to San Antonio and spent their
wedding night on the river on what
remained of a three-day pass.
The Burseys' 50th anniversary
plans included spending the evening
with friends on the Riverwalk.
After their marriage, Lillian began
working at the airbase, also. She re-
calls enjoying working foraLt. Pilk-
ington in in-coming processing.
When they left Hondo, Charles
went to B29 flight engineering
school in Amarillo.
He retired at Wright Patterson
AFB as an aerospace engineer.
The Burseys have four daughters
and four grandchildren. Carolyn is
an artist and lives in Guatemala;
Janice lives in the Blue Ridge Moun-
tains near Washington, D.C.; Sharon
is an attorney in New York and has
their only grandson; Leigh Ann lives
in West Palm Beach, Fla., and has
three daughters, including twins.
