Sabinal boys9 duo
falls in title mktch
Girls*pair reaches semis
of state tennis tournament
AwiHewMSpom Editor
Amtim - Any notion that the boys'
doubles team from Bruni would enjoy
an easy time Saturday in the Class A
finals against Sabinal's Hunter Keath
and Colin Trulove was dispelled
quickly. While the Bruni duo of Leo
Lopez and Mark Herrera did come
away with the championship, it came
in a 6-4, 7-5 match. Twice, Lopez-
Herrera fought off set points in the
second set before going on to the win.
Keath-lYulove had faced the Bruni
team in the regional finals two weeks
earlier at Btenham, losing in a deci-
sive 6-1, 6-1 match, but came out
ready for Bnrni's quickness, nearly
forcing the third set in the early morn-
ing match.
The Sabinal pair reached the finals
with two straight-set wins on Friday.
In the quarterfinals, Keath-Trulove
beat Gilbert Flores-Kichard Flexes of
Irion County, 6-3,6-3. In the semifi-
nals Friday afternoon, Sabinal came
away with a 6-4,6-4 win over Shawn
Early-Bobby Payne of Miami.
In a three-set semifinal match Fri-
day at the University of Texas Intra-
mural Courts, the Sabinal girls'
doubles pair of Maggie Davis-Cheryl
Story lost to eventual Class A cham-
pions, Jami Riggs and Crystal Frame
of Booker. Sabinal won the first set,
but Booker came back to win the
match, 5-7,6-3,6-3. Booker went up
by a break early in the third set, and
held on to win.
The Sabinal team easily won in the
quarterfinals, beating Jessica Carroll
and Brandy Byrd of Spurger, 6-1,6-2.
In the finals, Riggs-Frame defeated
Misty Betak-Ashley Carlson of
Thomdale, 7-5, 6-4, due in no small
part to a controversial 'out' call by
Frame. The point proved to be set
point in the opening set
Davis and Story are both seniors,
and this was their first trip to state as a
doubles team. Last year, Davis
teamed with Felicia Reyes to win the
Gass A state doubles crown.
Two singles players from Knippa
also competed in the state Gass A
tournament.
Johnny Gill reached the finals, be-
fore losing to Chance Morgan of Port
Aransas, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Morgan ar-
rived 50 miputes late for the match,
but was granted a hearing with the
UIL, and instead of Gill being
awarded the match, Morgan was as-
sessed a three-game penalty.
Gill won his two Friday matches,
defeating Stefano Sartori of Texline,
6-0,6-0, in the quarterfinals. He fol-
lowed that with a semifinal win over
D.J. Rainey of Irion County, 6-1,6-1.
In the girls' singles division,
Amanda Jucknies, also of Knippa,
won her quarterfinal match, 6-3,6-0
over Candice Connelly of Trenton,
but lost in the semifinals to Marci
Matthews of Anton, 6-3, 6-2. Mat-
thews went on to win the Class A girls'
singles crown on Saturday.

Ingram - The season came to a
disappointing finish for the Hondo
Owls' baseball team Friday night, in a
9-5 loss to the Ingram Warriors.
Hondo finished the season with a 9-
12 season mark and a 5-5 campaign in
District 27-AAA, placing the Owls
fourth in the loop.
Ingram concluded the year at 13-13
and 6-4 in district.
Warrior pitcher Nathan Mandahl
got the win, beating Hondo for the
third time this season, to raise his
record to 7-4.
Seniors Matt Albrecht and Hank
Stiteler did the pitching chores for the
Owls. Albrecht (1-2) lasted into the
second inning, before a five-run In-
gram uprising knocked him off the
mound.
Stiteler went the rest of the way for
Hondo, which drew close with three
runs in the top of the third, to cut the
deficit to 5-4. The Warriors added two
more runs in both the fifth and sixth
innings.
