Older Americans/Texans month activities *
focus attention on active, contributing seniors
May is both Older Americans
Month and Older Texans Month, a
dual celebration which acknowl-
edges the invaluable role the people
over 60 years of age play in their
communities.
The theme for older Americans
Month 1996, as designated by the
U.S. Administration on Aging
(AoA), Is "Aging: A Lifetime Op-
portunity." State agencies affiliated
with AoA, including the Texas/De-
partment on Aging (TDoA) and its
network of area agencies on aging,
will build upon that theme in state-
wide celebrations like Older Texans
Month.
"Seniors are often-and unfairly-
characterized as burdens the
younger members of society are
forced to bear,” noted Berta Rocha
MacaL "That stereotype overlooks
the millions of seniors who do com-
munity volunteer work, serve in
elected office, provide child care for
younger members of their families,
care for the frail and sick, and con-
tribute strongly to charitable organi-
zations.
"We all know people like that,
often in our own neighborhood and
families. Now is the time to show
these men and women that we see
what they're doing for us, and that we
appreciate it."
MCAH Picnic
set June 30 at
Hondo KC Hall
Medina County Association for
the Handicapped will hold its annual
Picnic Sunday, June 30, 4 to 8 p.m.
at the Hondo Knights of Columbus
Hall, 401 Carter (Hondo Airbase).
Music, food, fun and dancing are
in store free for each disabled per-
son and two guests, $3 for each ad-
ditional person. Donations are ac-
cepted. Everyone is invited.
For reservations, call Pete 741 -
3237, Virginia 665-5592, or Carolyn
426-2387.
Some of the Older Americans
Month and Older Texans Month
activities that Berta Rocha Macat
and officials at the U.S. Administra-
tion on Aging and Texas Department
on Aging are suggesting include:
• Recognition of senior volunteer
programs such as the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program, Foster Grand-
parents and Senior Companions:
• Participation in the Texas De-
partment on Aging nursing home
ombudsman program, a volunteer
program in which TDoA- certified
individuals --many of whom are
over 60 years of age-visit nursing
homes and help assure a good quality
of life for the residents;
• Hiring older workers. Many re-
tired seniors still have the desire and
ability to do useful, challenging
work on a full or part-time basis, but
do not believe their services are
needed or wanted in today's job
market. Employers who actively re-
cruit older workers are usually grati-
fied by the responsibility, energy and
work ethic the seniors bring to the
work environment; and
• Development of senior tutoring
and mentoring programs in local
schools. Many older people are re-
tired teachers, and many other pos-
sess the knowledge and patience to
strongly benefit children as both
instructors and role models.
