Retire? Not after only years of teaching
"MY MOM IS THE BE8T... in the world because of all the love
and time she spends with us, and when I have a problem she
helps me," wrote Jennifer Parsons of her mother Denise Par-
sons, and for the effort won a dozen long-stemmed red roses in
the Anvil Herald’s Mother’s Day contest in the 3-4 grade cate-
gory. Kent Reed of Reed’s Ever bloomin’ Flowers (top) pres-
ents Mrs. Parsons with her prize. Dorothy Embrey of Doro-
thy’s Flower Shop (bottom) looks on as Debbie and Courtney
Johnson admire the prize bouquet for the K-2 category.
Mauro praise* Edge
Represenlajve Eldon Edge was
'■raised by Texas I.and Commissioner
Garry Mauro for o>-sponsoring legis
lation to renew bonding authority for
(lie highly successful Texas Veterans
Housing Assistance Program
The resolution which passed both
houses of tTie Texas legislature by
overwhelming votes would put the
question of an additional $500 million
in bonding authority to the voters on
next November’s constitutional
amendment ballot
Since (lie housing program began a
little over a year ago, the Veterans
land Hoard has certified more than
Id,500 applications for loans to
purchase of a home, this program has
already put $330 million into the
Texas economy
As a result, the VHAP stimulates
the homebuilding industry as well as
creating jobs so I hat this program
lienefits not only Texas Veterans but
all Texans
Representative Edge states that
the Texas Veterans Housing Assist
anee Program lias not cost the
taxpayets of the state one penny

since World War II Tins enables
eligible Texas Vet era/is to borrow
$20,000 at less than 10 percent to
apply toward the purchase of a

The legislation follows the reoom

Texans were asked to approve similar
bonding authority, 71 percent voted

Miss Helen Richter, are synonymous
Now completing her 50th year in
the teaching profession Miss Richter
wasn’t going to let anyone know She
didn’t want to make a big thing out of
it, but high school principal Charles
Carlson and the school staff acciden-
tally figured it out And they decided
this was indeed, too important a
milestone in anyone's life to let it go
by unheralded
Miss Richter, who emphasized the
fact that she is NOT retiring, will be
honored with a reception before
Baccalaureate services Sunday May
19
Former students and others are
invited to attend the reception from 6
to 7 pm at St John's Catholic
Churrfi parish hall
“I don’t feel like it's been 50 years,"
said Miss Richter ’The young people
keep me young."
For a number of years, she has
served as senior sponsor guiding the
soon to-be graduates through the
formalities and ceremonies which
herald the end of their secondary
school years
Born m Philadelphia. Pa Miss
Richter received her bachelor's
degree from St Mary's University
and her Master s at A&I University
She taught one year in England in an
Air Force dependents school, and
then reti -ned to Kingsville for a
while before moving to Hondo
Tearfiing and traveling tire her
favorite things to do
She has taught numerous grade
levels, from first grade on up in the
30 years she has been a tearfier m
Hondo Some local first graders
studied again under her when they
reached high school Some had her
more than one year in high school as
she changed grade levels
So many students have been in her
classes, she said, “1 remember the
faces but names escape me
'The students you usually remem-
ber are the ones who were misrfiie
vous," she said with somewhat of a
twinkle in her eye
‘Many have problems,” she added
he twinkle giving way to a senous
tone, "and I feel sorry for them "
Now. she is seeing second genera
tion students those whose parents
she has taught
“It s interest ing to see how so many
of the second generation resemble
their parents." she remarked
With the topic of summer school
soon to come before the school board
she volunteered. "If summer srfiool is
approved I will teach ”
Later in the summer, however, her
thoughts will turn to Ixindon, one of
her favorite places, as she plans to
visit t here again in A ugust
“I like traveling ' she said “I've

been to the places in the world I’ve
wanted to see ”
She has been to Europe four time*
and toured the Scandanavian oouri-
tries Rome and Pans She has also
been to England several tunes and
has visited all but two Canadian
provinces and all but three states
Many of Miss Richter's students
have gone on to fare well in life And
most of them credit her with having
had a great deal of influence upon
their livet
A small sampling of local citizens
brought these responses
Vangie Pimentel a 1966 Hondo
High School graduate and City of
Hondo secretary. “Going into high
school her reputation as a mean
teacher had me scared of her I
thought I'd never be able to pass her
course but once I got there,
something about her smile told me
she wasn’t all the terrible things they
said she was 1 really enjoyed her
class and got a lot out of it It’s really
helped me iri my job. too ”
John Meyer dass of ’59, a medical
dcxTor and school board member:
Miss Richter combines the qualities
of longstanding dedication to her
profession with outstanding ability. I
feel she was a big help to me as I
attained my higher education because
of my solid foundation in literature
and grammar ”
I V Rios dass of 1964, high school
English teacher “I was in her English
II class She did a really fine job of
explaining the stones we studied and
was able to bring out subtlies and
elements of the stories
She is always a source to verify
things If she doesn't know, she’ll find
out for you
Several years ago, we realized that
all the teachers in the English
department at that time were
products of Miss Richter’s classes.”
Maida Modgling, an attorney and
1983 graduate: “As juniors we were
so I id Miss Richter, who was then
sponsor for I he class play, called off
play praet ice We brought her flowers
and she relented She tried to be
stern, hut we all knew she was a
softie .“
Tim Coyle, assistant principal at
HHS and a 1971 graduate: “I’ve
mentioned to her that she can’t retire.
She's like a mother to the seniors; she
keeps t hem in line She represents so
much of what Hondo represents The
kids respect her so much that it rubs
off on them We can’t let her retire,
we need her here too much.”
Anna Van De Walle, county derk
and 1959 graduate: “Miss Richter has
for years bestowed her talents on the
youth of our community. I feel
fortunate to have been one of her
students.”
It has been a privilege and an honor
to have been asked to compile this
small tribute to a very special teacher
and lady at t his milestone in her life. -
