Cowboys bonk
Rockcrushers
at bi-district
By Carolyn Huesser
Special to the Anvil Herald_
Uvalde - D'Hanis opened its play-
off drive with a solid 79-66 bi-district
crushing of Knippa Friday night at
Southwest Texas Junior College.
The Rockcrushers finish their bas-
ketball season at 16-11, while the
Cowboys advanced to the area round
against Bartlett with a 20-7 mark.
Friday's game was a team perform-
ance. The Cowboys worked together,
skillfully and successfully executing
their offense. All five players did their
part as D'Hanis led early in the game
and held the lead throughout.
Late in the first period, two identi-
cal plays back-to-back, helped put
DHanis up 24-15. Hie pass to
Modesto Rodriguez under the basket
was sent back out,4p Ryan Rothe who
hit two three-pointers. All the Cow-
boys were on target, as four players
hit double figures.
Midway through the second pe-
riod, Knippa came within six of
DHanis at 28-22, but that was as
close as it got. The Cowboys pulled
away and scored 20 points in die pe-
riod. Plays near the end of the half got
the D'Hanis crowd excited.
Rothe threw a long pass down coifrt
where Rodriguez was waiting for the
layup. Rothe again hit a three-pointer
and was fouled. For the game, he was
7-of-7 from the line. At the buzzer,
Rothe nearly sank a shot from three-
quarter court, but DHanis still had a
sizable lead, at 44-30..
Kole Lovett, who topped the charts
for ‘ DHanis with 22 points, and
Knippa's Samuel Esquivel, who led
all scorers with 30, both seemed to
rally in the third period. The Cowboys
added 17 in the quarter and widened
their lead to 61-42.
Senior John Paul Reinhart twice
drew shooting fouls as he sunk bas-
kets. He was 4-of-4 on free throws,
totaled 18 points and had six boards.
Classmate Billy Frieda finished the
game with 14 points and two steals.
D'Hanis was perfect on free throws
down to the last two minutes of the
game. The Cowboys shot 20-of-23,
the best FT shooting this season. The
substitutes got in some playing time
late in the quarter, as the Cowboys
as OHanis came away with 27 re-
bounds and nine steals. Lovett led the
team with 10 boards and Rodriguez
came up with four steals.
D'HANIS: Kole Lovett 22, John Paul Rein-
hart 18, Ryan Rothe 18, Billy Frieda 14,
Modesto Rodriguez 6, Travis Attaway 1,
David Gonzales, Charlie Langfeld, Ben Ortiz,
Gabriel Rodriguez.
KNIPPA: Samuel Esquivel 30, Chad Jones
12, Bracey Keeney 8, Jeff Goode 8, Joe Goode
6, Ortiz 2.
D'HANIS: Kole Lovett 18, John Paul Rein-
hart 12, Billy Frieda 11, Ryan Rothe 7,
Modesto Rodriguez 4, Charlie Langfeld 2,
David Gonzales 2, Travis Attaway.
BARTLETT: Johnny Walker 12, Jeff Hill
16, Cavanaugh 9, Newell 8, Hill 6, Hooser 4,
Williams 2, Anderson.
D'Hanis
opens
Friday
The start of the DHanis baseball
season has been delayed because of
the Cowboys' success in the basket-
ball playoffs. Two games had to be
canceled because of the number of
players still on the court.
Last Friday's scrimmage at La
Pryor and Tuesday's season opener at
Crystal City were both scratched.
With Tuesday's basketball playoff
loss to Bartlett, DHanis will now
open baseball season Friday after-
noon, when Lytle is scheduled to visit
DHanis at 4:15.
. The Cowboys have six returning
starters, four upcoming lettermen,
1990 HONDO VARSITY GIRLS'BASKETBALL TEAM... (Front row, from left) Jennifer Modgling, Mandy ancl numerous freshman hopefuls.
Hackebeil.Tabatha Garcia, Monica Gauna. (Back row) Coach Chuck Young, Cheryl Harris, Linda Long, Bea Returning pitchers for DHanis will
DeLeon, Jennifer DeCock, Shelly Mooney, Manager Susan Brucks. DU^tnc be ?eniors Gabriel Rodriguez and
Alvin Guerra. Sophomore Ryan
Rothe will also be back.
The season looks to be another
good one for DHanis, with the expe-
rience coming back off last year's 15-
6 squad. The freshmen were all team
members of a championship Senior
League team, which fielded an All-
Star team to the area playoffs. Expe-
rience is one of the Cowboys' strong
points, but with the extended basket-
ball season, practice in the sport has -
been down. The momentum could
carry over and make for a successful
start to the baseball season.

• Just as the season came to an end
Friday for Hondo's basketball team,
so did the Owls' modern-day school
record streak of holding 13 straight
opponents under 50 points, when
Sinton scored 62.
• The 23-9 seasop equals Hondo's
second highest win total ever. The
1987-88 Owls were also 23-9.
Hondo's winningest team, the 27-2
squad from 1974-75, seems to keep
getting better as time goes by.
Netters to play
( in SWTJC meet
The Hondo High School tennis
team was scheduled to have hosted
Kerrville Tivy Tuesday in Hondo.
The Tivy squad canceled, however.
The next action for the HHS netters
is this Friday and Saturday in Uvalde
for the Southwest Texas Junior Col-
lege Tournament.
On Tuesday, the team will go to the
Northside Tennis Complex to take on
the Taft Raiders in a dual meet.
