Altar Society News
St. John's Altar Society will spon-
sor a Day of Recollection March 7 for
all ladies of the parish. Mass will
begin at 12 noon, after which a light
lunch will be served in the parish hall.
SisterRachel, of the Missionary Cate-
chists Divine Providence Order, will
lead the Retreat.
On Feb. 21, the Altar Society met
for their monthly business meeting at
St. John's parish hall. President Rosie
Aelvoet opened the meeting and Sis-
ter Rose Marie led members in prayer.
It was reported that the tour of
Painted Churches will be April 19.
Cost of the tour is $20- deadline for
reservations is March 7. Several
churches in the Schulenberg area will
be visited. Lunch will be at a restau-
rant in the vicinity. Bus will leave
Memorial Square, across from St.
John's, at 7:30 am and will return
about 6:30 pm. Please call Rosie
Aelvoet for additional information.
Patsy Graff displayed the beautiful
quilt top donated to the Altar Society
by Ms. Ursie Lee Rock in honor of her
mother, Mrs. Mary Ursula Rock. All
materials needed to finish the quilt
v jre also donated by Ms. Rock and
( uilters will begin soon.
Alvena Rieber reported that several
-cards had been sent to sick members.
Rosary was recited before the Altar
Society mass in honor of Dora Nev.
Kathleen Finger reported the
committee for visiting the sick will
begin their services the first Monday
in March. A member from the Altar
Society and Guadalupana Society
will make weekly visits to Catholic
patients at Medina Community Hos-
pital. Father Paul Cleary elaborated
on the procedures involved.
Cakes were taken to Heritage
Manor by Lorene Bendele, Cecelia
Koch, Lorine Taylor and Bonnie
Menk; Irene Rath played the piano.

the Way of the Cross will be held on
Monday nights during Lent. Each
society of the parish will plan and
participate in leading one of the Litur-
gies. The Altar Society will do so
March 12. Vivian Zinsmeyer, Claire
Richter, and Bernice Hermes will
plan the format.
Delicious refreshments were
served by hostesses Alvena Rieber,
Gladys Rudinger, Mary Pennington,
Dorothy Muennink, and Bea Pope.
Bingo prizes were won by Fay
McGraw, Elsie Rothe, Irene Rath and
Bobbie Christopher.
Next regular Altar Society meeting
will be March 21 at 2 pm in the parish
hall.
The school lunch menu for March
7, to March 9, 1990 will be.
Friday - Tuesday -Mini-break.

Meyer) Hamburgers, burger salad,
french fries, deep dish apple pie and
milk. (High School) Enchiladas, re-
fried beans, Spanish rice, pineapple
chunks, enriched bread, and milk.

Enchiladas, refried beans, Spanish
rice, pineapple chunks, enriched
bread, and milk. (High School) Ham-

fast assorted cereals, whole wheat
toast, golden tropics juice, and milk.
Friday: Tuna salad sand, home-
made soup, peach and banana slices,
crackers, and milk. Breakfast glazed
doughnuts, peach slices, and milk.
A salad is available at McDowell
and Hondo High on Friday.

Obituary
Julius Bucek, age 84, of Hal-
lettsville, passed away Friday, Feb.
16,1990.
He is survived by wife, Margaret
Bucek of Halletsville; three sons and
a daughter; numerous grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; and one sis-
ter, Mrs. Irene Kocurek of Mico.
Funeral services were held at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church and
interment in the Sacred Heart Ceme-
tery, Halletsville.
On Wednesday morning, Mico
received 1 1/2 inches of much-needed
rain.
Mrs. Brett Cash and son Harrison
of Lakehills visited her mother, Mrs.
Peggy Long on Wednesday. .
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Kocurek left
on Thursday for a long week-end in
New York City. While there, they
plan to take in some shows.
Francis Fleming is back home after
undergoing surgery in St. Rose Hos-
pital in San Antonio. The surgery
took place on Tuesday. We wish a
speedy recovery for Francis.
Matt and Tootsie Dugosji visited
with the Arthur Pues in San Antonio
on Thursday. They enjoyed being
with their great niece and her hus-
band, Norman Becker, and their chil-
dren, Cody and Jenifer. They are from
California.

Mrs. Matilda (Tillie) Broggie, age
95, of San Antonio, passed away
Monday, Feb. 19, 1990.
She is survived by her son, Ernest
Broggi Jr.; daughter, Juliet Marie
Broggi; two sisters, Annie Specia and
Mary Pizzini, both of San Antonio;
two brothers, David Bolner of Mico
and Anthony Bolner of San Antonio;
one grandson and one granddaughter.
Mass was celebrated at 10 am
Thursday in St. Henry's Catholic
Church, with Rev. James Dudley as
celebrant. Burial was in San Fer-
nando Cemetery. Arrangements by
the Angelus Funeral Home.

Leonard V. Rodriguez of Yancey,
is listed on the Dean's Honor Roll for
the Fall quarter at Texas State Techni-
cal Institute in Waco.
Rodriguez, a student in the Meat
Processing and Marketing prograjn,
is the son of Azalia S. Rodriguez of
7ancey, and a graduate of D'Hanis
High School.
The dean's honor roll is for students
with a grade point average between
3.5 and 3.9.

We are sorry to report that Guen-
ther Bippa tof Mico is very ill. He has
returned home this week after a stay in
a San Antonio Hospital. Our prayers
are with him.

Edward Knight soloed for the first
time since his surgery the first part of
February. He picked up Danny
O'Connell and they enjoyed breakfast
together. Edward has not been able to
drive the car since his surgery.
Mico Fire Department will hold a
C.P.R. Class Sunday afternoon,
March 4, at the Fire House.
Mrs. Michael Pagonis, daughters
Elizibeth, Rebbeca and Mr. and Mrs.
Steve Walton of San Antonio spent a
delightful weekend here in their
home- away-from-home.
James and Shelia Crawford spent a
week in Rockport, relaxing and en-
joying Fulton Beach and Goose Is-
land.
Devine Methodist
schedule benefit
There will be a community wide
benefit sponsored by the First United
Methodist Church of Devine held
Saturday, March 31. A barbecue din-
ner with all the trimmings will be held
from 5-7 pm in the Devine High
School Cafeteria. A fun-filled Tal-
ent-Gong Show will follow in the
Devine High School Gymn at 7:30
pm.
A combination dinner-show ticket
will be pre-sold for $5. The cost to
attend the Talent-Gong Show only
w ill be $3 at the door.
