Mangum enjoys holiday trip to California
As a winner of a "Home for the
Holidays" flight given by South-
west Airlines for the Senior Citi-
zens, Jewel Mangum enjoyed visit-
ing Redondo Beach, Calif., with
her grandson.
Mrs. Mangum said she saw some
beautiful things on her trips, in-
cluding the historical park and
ranch house of Will Rogers, Ma-
rina Del Rey - Chase Park, and
Wayfarer's Glass Church.
Mrs. Mangum said in a letter to
the Hondo Nutrition Center, "There
is a beauty and a blessing to being
a Senior Citizen. To leave our
troubles obl the doorstep and go
into The Senior Center and an un-
planned trip is won, but most is the
love you feel. To the leaders, my
gratitude. Love, Jewell Mangum"
Agnes Ney was also a "Home for
the Holidays" winner. She said she
had a very nice time in Dallas. She
visited with her great-grandson and
stayed in Dallas three wonderful
days. Mrs. Ney is 83 years of age
and traveling is a little difficult, so
winning an airline ticket worked
out just right for her. She also said
she has 14 grandchildren so, if she
were to win again next time, she
has a place to visit for sure.
The third winner was Jimmy
Heiligman. He chose to go to San
Diego, Cal. He was also very
happy to win a trip like this.
Southwest Airlines offers a trip
to Senior Citizens who register at
the Center they usually visit in
Medina County. All the names are
sent to the Hondo Nutrition Center
and a drawing was held. One win-
ner and an alternate were chosen.
This year we were lucky enough
to receive extra tickets because a
couple of surrounding counties
were not able to use theirs. There-
fore, we were able to draw two
more winners.
On behalf of Medina County and
the Senior Nutrition Centers, we
would like to thank Southwest Air-
lines for their generous gift.

The Waltens perform at McDowell
On February 15, the McDowell
Student Council proudly hosted the
acrobatic family, The Waltens. The
program was provided for the 5th
through 8th grade students in the
McDowell Gym.
The Walten Family from Belgium
has been performing their skills for 30
years around the world. Their "fam-
ily" includes Willie and Finkerbell
Walten and their poodles, Corvette
and John-Boy.
They performed a variety of tricks
such as balancing acts, juggling, and
acrobatic stunts. All of these stunts
require hours of practice and intense
concentration, they said.
Four students were chosen from the
audience to attempt to do a balancing
act on a cylinder and a board. These
students were Jason Sprenger a 5th
grader^ Mark Esparza from the 6th
grade, and Christy Gear and Houston
Haak, both from the 7th grade. They
all agreed that it was not as easy as it
looked.
