graduate of Hondo High
School.
Her fiance, son of Mr and
Mrs. Valentine L. Garza, of
San Antonio, is a graduate of
McCollum High School in
San Antonio.

Rose care outlined
any broken or diseased

Prune most bush roses to

canes 18- to 24-inches tall
Hybrid tea varieties may be

duce an abundance of small
blooms, one-half to produce a
moderate number of
medium-sized flowers, and
three-fourths to provide a
smaller number of exhibi

Prune climbing and rambl

eliminate most flowers this
year.
Treat all cut ends with
asphalt wound dressing or a
drop or two of common
white glue to keep insects
out, suggests the horticul-
turist.
To promote vigorous

equivalent, around each
With a little “tender

£ provide plenty of beautiful
£ blooms during 1984.
•t “While roses are a world-

J: ance if they are to be
f: productive," says Everett
cE Janne, landscape horticul-

ll cultural Extension Service,
jf Texas A&M University
System.
f- Set out new varieties of
bare-root plants no later
than four weeks before the
£ area's average last frost
date. However, container
plants can be set out at any
time.
Prune roses in early
£ spring, just as leaf buds

t; active growth starts. Be
£ cause of the severe Decem-
£ ber freeze over Texas,
3 pruning may have to be
** delayed until actual growth
stalls, notes the horticul
turist. Cut off all winter-
£ killed growth and remove
bush, but at least 12 inches
from the trunk Work the
fertilizer into the top inch of
soil and water thoroughly.
On sandy or infertile soil,
fertilize every three to four
weeks.
Janne recommends keep-
ing several inches of a mulch
of sawdust, wood chips or
peat moss around the plants.
And, to control blackspol. a
fungus disease, spray plants
every week during the
summer with benlate,
manzate or Funginex.
