Panthers roll, 35-0
M.Y. back to normal
BY ROLAND RUIZ
Last Friday night proved to be a
homecoming in more ways than one
for Medina V'alley.
The football matchup between the
Panthers and the Pearsall Mavericks
signified more than the coming home
of Medina Valley alumni. The game
marked the return of something that
was missing all season long - Panther
domination.
Behind a sound ground game and
tough defense, the Panthers de-
stroyed the Mavericks, 35-0, bringing
home memories of last year’s
championship team.
Medina Valley used the running of
Pat Zinsmeister and Michael Kempf
to build an insurmountable lead of
28-0 at the half. After one half of play,
Kempf had 98 yards rushing and
Zinsmeister had 94.
Meanwhile, at the half, Pearsall’s
total offensive output amounted to
two yards. 13 rushing and -11 passing.
The Panthers established domin-
ance early as they scored on their
first possession of the night. M.V.
used an 11-play drive to move from its
own 47-yard line to the Pearsall 6, and
ate 5:36 off the dock.
Then with 6:24 left in the first
quarter. Charles Wurzbach ran it in
on the quarterback option. Bryan
Bippert’s extra point was good.
The Panther defense also esta-
blished who was boss early as it
forced Pearsall to punt on its first
possession Six Maverick drives
would end in punts, three in
interceptions, one in a fumble end one
the Mavericks turned it over after
being stopped on fourth down.
While the Panther defense was
shutting out the Pearsall offense,
Medina Valley's running duo of
Zinsmeister and Kempf was churning
up the ground with consistent gains.
Medina Valley scored on its first
four possessions
The second score came With 1D4
left in the first quarter. The Panthers
had moved from the Pearsall 44-yard
line to the 2 From there, Zinsmeister
shoved his way into the endzone. The
point after attempt split the uprights
and M V. had a 14-0 lead
On its third possession, M.V
launched another drive that would
culminate in yet another score
Starting from their own 16, the
Panthers used five plays to get to
their own 46 Then Kempf took the
pitch from Wurzbach and tight roped
his way down the sideline for 54 yards
and a touchdown The PAT was good
and the scoreboard read M.V. 21,
Pearsall 0
But Medina Valley wasn't finished
- not yet.
The Panthers made it four for four
as they scored on their fourth
possession of the game.
This time, it took the Panther
offense'just two plays to hit paydirt
Starting from the Pearsall 41-yard
line, M.V. used two running plays -
one by Wurzbach for 21 yards and one
by Kempf for 20 - to get six more
points on the scoreboard. The PAT
was good, and M.V. was on top, 28-0,
in the first half, and the score
remained that way going into the

Monday
Tickets for the upcoming grudge
match between Hondo and Medina
Valley will go on sale Monday
morning at the Superintendent’s
Office
"We sent all the tickets on the
visitor’s side to Medina Valley," said
N.E. “Bud” Woolls, HISD Superin-
tendent, “and we're sure they 11 use
all of those.
"We should have tickets here at the
office for non-season ticket holders
during most of the next week,’’ he
said. But he added that everyone
should try to get their seats early,
since this wont exactly be a small
gathering
"We're hoping for another capacity

halftime.
As the second half got under way,
it looked as though Pearsall was in
store for much more of the same.
Pearsall opened the half on offense,
and on the third play from scrim-
mage, things turned sour for the
Mavericks.
Pearsall turned the ball over to the
Panthers when quarterback Michael
Alcala threw an Interception. Wurz-
bach returned the ball to the Pearsall
23-yard line to put M.V. in scoring
position
Then after four plays, Zinsmeister
lunged one-yard into the endzone.
After tacking on the PAT, Medina
Valley had a 35-0 lead.
There would be no more scoring on
the night as the Maverick defense
toughened up and the Panthers gave
their reserves needed playing time.
And even the Panther backups
looked finely tuned. Second string
tailback Marcus Vallejo, substituting
for Kempf in the second half, rushed
for 89 yards. (
The Panthers as a team)rushed for
330 yards while allowing Pearsall
only 92 yards on the ground. M.V.
also passed for 76 more iydhds and
Pearsall was held to -11 yards in the
air.
The Panthers look like, khey are
finally playing as expected - just in
time for district play wbjqt) begins
this Friday.
Medina Valley will be playing host
to the Poteel Aggies and kickoff is set
for 8 p.m.

Sportsmanship urged
For the first time this year, the
schools of Dislqpt 28-AAA are
offering a trophy for the best
all-around school.
The award, according to Hondo
Principal Cha-ks Carlson, will be
presented to the school that has the
best combined showing in all sports,
UIL competitions, band contests,
one-act play, and any other areas of
competition between schools.
Another area of consideration
where the student bogy cm make a
difference is in spartsmnehip.
“We want to win that award,” said
Carlson, "but it’s going to take the
cooperation of the entire student
body. We always need to show the
best sportsmanship possible when
other schools come to town.”
The other events should all take
care of themselves.

Cotulla - Interceptions by the
Cotulla Cowboys at crucial moments

Cowboys a 13-6 win over the Sabinal
Yellowjackets last Friday in non-
district action. It was the Cowboys’
first win of the season, while Sabinal
falls to 2-3.
The key pickoff of Cotulla's four
interceptions occurred late in the
game with Sabinal trailing 7-6. Randy
Hinojosa ripped off a Yellowjacket
pass, and returned it 64 yards to the
Sabinal 4-yard line. Two plays later,
with 3:11 left in the contest, Dale
Avant found Rudy Maldonado open
for a 3-yard TO pass for the
game-dindier.
Cotulla had also gotten off to a fast
start in the game, when the opening
kickoff was returned 55 yards to the
Sabinal 31. It took only six plays for
the Cowboys to get into the endzone,
with Avant scoring from nine yards
away. Rogelio Rodriguez added the
extra point, to give Cotulla a 7-0 lead
with 8 56 left in the ooening period
Shortly before the half, Sabinal put
together a 48-yard drive in nine plays,
