down during laat Thursday’s win over the
JV plasters Bandera, 34-0
Bwltn - The Hondo Owl JV left a
bad taste In the mouths of the
Banders BuOdogi hat Thursday, as
they sliced, diced, pureed, and
frappeed their opponents, 34-0, at
Bulldog Stadium.
The undefeated Owls (5-0) totally
outmusded Bandera in the contest,
winning the first down count 18-3,
and cut rushing the Bulldogs, 251-30.
For good measure, Hondo also gained
101 yards through the air to just 16
for Bandera
On Its first two possessions,
however, Hondo was unable to come
up with any points. Die second drive,
after Bandera fumbled an Owl punt,
stalled at the Bulldogs’ 11-yard line.
After Bandera had punted, Hondo

quickly drove 49 yards for the score.
Two runs by David Miranda netted 17
yardB, and on a 2nd-and 10, quarter-
back Dm Carter went deep and found
Rene Rodriguez for a 32-yard TD
pass. The two-point conversion failed,
but the Owls had grabbed a 6-0 lead in
the late stages of the opening
quarter. That lead would only
continue to get bigger.
An offsides penalty against the
Owls gave Bandera its only first down
of the first half, but the Hondo
defense allowed no more yardage on
that possession. Facing a 4th-and-2 at
the Hondo 46, fullback Shaun Aamodt
was dropped for a loss of a yard by
Eddie Luce.
The Owls then asserted themselves
on an eight-play, 51-yard drive that
culminated with Carter keeping for a
five-yard touchdown. The big play in
the (hive was a 27-yard run by Buddy
Frick on an inside reverse handoff.
But again, the two-point attempt was
no good, leaving the score at 12-0 with
7:14 to play in the half.
Hondo's next possession didnt go
anywhere, thanks to a pass intercep-
tion by Bandera's Casey Trenklebach.
Die Bulldogs, however, were also
stymied by a tough Owl defense,
which included a sack by lineman
Rene Benavides, who dropped quar-
terback Willie Bates for a 6-yard loss.
Starting at their own 26, the Owls
moved quickly again, beginning with
a 36-yard play that started as a screen
pass from Carter to Doug Schmidt,
but ended up with Schmidt utilizing
his blockers, and doing some fine
broken field running.
Die Owls converted a 4th-and-l on
a short plunge by Miranda, who
finished the day with 85 yards on 13
carries On the following play, wide
receiver John Collins leaped High in
the air to pull down a Carter aearial at
the 5-yard line with time running out
in the half. It didnt matter though, as
Hondo put the ball in the endzone on
the next play, when Schmidt scored
on a sweep. Sdimidt had a busy drive,
since he also caught the pass for the
two-point conversion, to give the
Owls a 20-0 lead as halftime arrived.
Hondo wasted little time getting
back on track in the second half,
driving 42 yards for the score after a
Bandera punt. The Owls did manage
to make things a little difficult on
themselves, though A lst-and-goal at
the 6-yard line was soon transformed
into a 3rd-and-goal at the 22, due to
penalties and incompletionsj but
Carter kept for 11 yards, and On 4th
down, he swung a pass to Ricky
Barrios, who took it for the TD, with
4:13 remaining in the period. That
same duo combined for the conver-
sion to put Hondo ahead 28-0.
The Owls had one more drive left in
their game plan. This one was a
time-consuming, 14-play drive that
covered 70 yards. Nathan Carroll
picked up the touchdown from a yard
out with four minutes left.
Tonight (Thursday) the JV will be
back at home, as they take their
perfect record up against the
Somerset Bulldogs. The game will
follow the freshman game between
the two schools. Hondo's freshmen
(3-1) were idle last week, but will be
ready to take the field at 5:30 this
afternoon.

Hondo Owl
return game
clicking
It seems that every week, Hondo
has one area of its game that is really
a liability. Against Fredericksburg, it
was the penalty. With Uvalde, the
problem was in the goalline offense.
The Boeme game was plagued with
fumbles, while the Carrizo game had
several little things. In the Bandera
game, penalties hit the spotlight
again. Hondo was flagged nine times
for 75 yards, while Bandera received
no penalties. It’s always something.
But one phase of Hondo’s game has
been superb throughout the course of
the season.
‘Our kick return teai . are really
performing well for us every week,”
said Mitchell. "You cant say enough
how much that good field position
means to us every time.”
In each of its five games, Hondo has
walloped its opposition in the area of
return yardage. Halfway through the
season, Hondo’s total is 318 yards,
while the five opponents have
amassed only 78 yards. Return
yardage takes into consideration
yards gained on punt and interception
returns.
Kickoff returns are not included,
but keep in mind that John Barrios
has broken two kickoffs back to
midfield this season, and also
remember Jeff Rochat’s punt return
of 63 yards which was completely
wiped out last week by a roughing
call. Those are some pretty serious
figures.
"We feel that our kick return team
can break one long at any time,” said
Mitchell. “And when you have that
added explosive dimension, it can
really make you a dangerous football
team.”

Cowboys were Tapia with 90 yards
and Joby Langfeld with 61.
Next week D’Hanis takes on the
Asherton Trojans at home Saturday
night beginning at 8 p.m. The big
question this week in D’Hanis
is...How do we get the Leakey red
color off the Cowboy’s helmets? The
answer...You don’t get it off, you just
add a lot of Asherton maroon to them.
A victory line before the game
proved to work, so see you in line
Saturday night.
OFF-BALANCE... but he hung on to it, anyway. Beau Van De
Walle hauls in a second quarter screen pass from quarterback
Junny Barrios, before being hit by a Bandera defender.
