Find Spirit : -
In AH Comers
How can you change
something which everyone says
is so good that it does not
need changing?
This is the problem facing
the 1983-84 Cheerleaders when
planning the Friday afternoon
pep rallies. The cheerleaders
who make the rallies what
they are include Head
Cheerleader Stacie Van De
Walle, and Liz Barrios, Mercy
Sanchez, Mary Laughinghouse,
and Judy Rummel.
These five girls are
charged with supporting the
0 wls and making sure there is
plenty of Owl spirit to go
around. The girls have made a
tremendous effort this year to
work with each other, and
they feel that the students
have responded ^ery well so
far at the pep rallies.
This year the cheerleaders
brought back the Spirit Stick.
The Stick will be used at each
pep ralley to show which class
has the most spirit. The
cheerleaders also enjoy the
Minnows coming over from
McDowell Middle School as
they add to the activity and
"they give the high School
students some competition."
For future pep rallies the
cheerleaders are planning more
skits with volleyball and
football players taking part.

Involvement Is The Key...
SC Searches For Invisible Kid9
One of the many aspects
of Student Council work is to
involve the uninvolved student.
Take the Invisible Kid, for
instance. In every school,
there is at least one Invisible
Kid — one who has never
attained greatness but has not
been in serious trouble either.
The Invisible Kid makes
good grades but is never quite
good enough to be on top. It is
that Invisible Kid who will
never achieve his full
potential unless someone
reaches him and teaches him
about "specialness."
And this is what Student
Council is all about. Student
Council wants to get all the
students of Hondo High
School— including all of those
Invisible Kids— involved in
making HHS one of the best in
Texas.
So, beware, Invisible Kids,
the Student Council wants
YOU.
Klaerner,"Adjusting to a new
position is always difficult,
but now that I am finally
getting settled, I can see that
there are some really exciting
possibilities for the talent that
the band has."
The band has been
rehearsing since the beginning
of August in hopes of a
successful year. Thelma added,
"The band is pleasing the
crowds at the football games
while working on their contest
show. As of now, the show
consists of 'Sirocco,'
'Malaguena,' and 'Czardas,'
but the final selection for
Marching Contest has not yet
been set."
The band will be
performing their routine at the
OIL Marching Contest
scheduled in Hondo on Nov. 5.
Do It Yourself Projects Show Home Ec Skills
Housing and Home
Furnishing students are
refinishing wooden objects
they have brought from home
such as chairs, gunstocks,
signs, tables, and benches.
They are learning how to
remove paint, re glue joints,
use tongue oil, varnish, stain,
and steel wool the furniture.
"We are finding out the
amount of work that goes into
the finishing of an old piece
of furniture. Hopefully we will
appreciate wooden objects,
craftsmanship skills, and hard
work,"said Mrs. Dot tie Wolff.
Mrs. Wolff continued, "Some
of our pieces had to be taken
apart and reglued. Some of us
never used an electric sander
but most of the pieces have to
be sanded by hand."
The class also toured an
old home that is being
restored and they hope to see
it again in December to notice
the progress.
Home Furnishing Teacher Dottie Wolff demon-
strates the proper way to strip old paint
from a chair. Students brought wooden
items from home to strip, repair, and re-
finish as part 6f' their class work.
