Hondo volleyball
sees ups and downs
The Hondo Owls volley-
ball teams turned in mixed
results in the past week,
winning a tournament, but
losing some crucial district
games.
All three teams traveled
to Pleasanton last Thursday,
and only one came back with
a victory.
The Varsity lost, 15-11,
15-7. High point was Liz Van
, Damme with 7. The Fresh-
j men also lost, 15$, 15-12.
, High point was Susie
Aelvoet with 8.
i But the Junior Varsity
won, 15-7, 15-10. High point
was Deborah Mendoza with
a total of seven,
a total of seven.
The Varsity went to
Leakey for an impromptu
j trounament last Saturday,m
tournament last Saturday,
and ended up taking first
place. Their victories were
over Ingram, 15-0,15-8; the
Uvalde JV, 15-3, 15-7; and
against the Uvalde Varsity
15-9,15-11. High point on the
team for the tourney was
Dina Keilman with 28.
“We kind of got in a
slump,” said Coach Jerry
Bridges, referring to the
losses to Pleasanton. But
after the improvement at
the right track, mentally.
After last weekend, the
Varsity owned a record of
15-6 (2-2 in district play), the
JV was at 14-3 (4-0), and the
Freshmen had fallen to 7-7
(3-1).
Today, all three teams will
host Pearsall, currently the
top team in District 27-AA A.

Game over in 12 seconds
Panthers crush outmanned Aggies
By Jeff Berger
CastrovUle - If high school
football games lasted only 12
seconds, Medina Valley
would have won this one 2-0.
But instead, they last 48
minutes. So Medina Valley
won, 56-0.
But the senior-laden
Panthers and the sopho-
more-laden Poteet Aggies
weren’t as evenly matched
as the final score might
indicate. Medina Valley led
46-0 at the half, and had
several more opportunities
to score in the third and
fourth quarters, but Coach
Jack Narrell is not the kind
of guy who runs up the score
on a weak opponent.
On the opening kickoff, a
clipping penalty against the
Aggies brought the ball
back to the 5-yard line, and
on the first play from
scrimmage, an unblocked
Doug Gerloff raced through
the middle of the Poteet line
to trap running back
Edmund Ramirez in the
endzone for a safety. Twelve
seconds off the dock, and the
Panthers had a 2-0 lead.
After the Aggies’ free
kick, the Panthers took just
four Dlavs to march 34 yards
with Albert Lopez scoring
from a yard out. Darren
Mueller hit the first of his
seven extra points for a 9-0
Panther lead, even before
the ten minute mark of the
first quarter.
M.V. began their next
possession in their own
territory, a place in which
they spent very little time,
and in which Poteet spent no
time. It only took two plays,
though, to move the 55 yanls
needed for the score, as
Derek Kempf went 48 yards
around left end for the TD.
The Panthers added an-
other score late in the
period, with Lopez capping a
58-yard drive with a 2-yard
plunge.
As if 23 was a routine
score, the Panthers added
another 23 in the second
period. Paul Zinsmeister
bulled over from five yards
out for a 30-0 lead with 9:35
to go in the half, and 95
seconds later, Aggie Javier
Garcia lined up to punt near
his own goal line, only to
have the snap go over his
head. Seeing no way out,
Garcia fell on the loose ball
and conceded another
safety.
Brad Haby swept right
end for a 5-yard score on the
Panthers’ next possession,
and wit just 56 seconds left
Steve Tedford followed left
Steve Tedford followed left-
side linemen Doug Gerloff
and Jesse Mendez for a
touchdown, to bring the
score to 46-0.
The Panthers’ second
string offense, which had
already scored twice in the
first half, picked up right
where it had left off, by
driving 42 yards in seven
plays for another TD. End
Gabriel Raygosa took an
inside reverse handoff from
quarterback Bill Tschirhart,
and broke several tackles on
the way to the endzone, for
the final six-pointer of the
game. Mueller finished off a
perfect night of extra points,
with his seventh in seven
tries. He also added a field
goal on the first play of the
fourth quarter on a first-and-
ten from the Poteet 13, to
bring the final margin to
56-0.

their final drive of the night,
