‘Meet the Challenge
Volunteers are needed to help
launch the America Reads Chal-
lenge. Volunteers will act as reading
partners with children joining the
Read*Write*Now program. For 30
minutes a week, the volunteers will
meet with a child and assist with
helping the child develop reading
skills. A booklet is provided for each
volunteer, containing procedures to
use in helping guide the child's skill
development at various ages and
reading levels. Included also is a list
of suggested books for varying ages.
This reading program was first
launched in 1993 as a national effort
to maintain and increase reading
skills in children by calling on whole
communities to joi* in helping chil-
dren read. The kits were developed
by reading experts, and libraries
across the country are now ready to
provide the books and guidance for
children and their reading partners.
The partner may be a family mem-
ber or any one willing to come and
help the children.
Call the library if you are willing
to be a learning partner in the read-
ing program. 426-3333.

facing the powerful drug dealer.
Escobar wanted a deal with the gov-
ernment wherein he could give him-
self up and be held in Columbia un-
der terms favorable to his comfort
and with a guarantee of safety to his
family. A rival drag cartel or the po-
lice would kill both him and his fam-
ily unless the government offered
security and prison protection.
The level of violence in Colum-
bia is staggering. Before the 1990
presidential campaign four presiden-
tial candidates were assassinated.
Many other acts of terrorism were
frequent events in the Columbian
wars among the drug bosses, the
guerrillas, and the government. The
terrorists murdered ambushed police
and the police picked up boys from
the Medellin slums and shot them,
assuming most worked for Escobar
or supported him.
In Medellin 457 police had been
killed in a few months time; in Janu-
ary and February of 1991 there were
1,200 murders. For each dead police-
man killed by the adolescents of the
slums of that city, payment was given
by the drug cartel.
From September 1983 to January
1991,26 Columbian journalists were
By Anita Lowe
murdered by the drug cartels. The
Extraditables was the name used by
the group of drug dealers who faced
'possible extradition to the United
States. This is the group which kid-
napped the 10 people and held them
at various sites while pressuring the
government to change the extradition
policy. The leader was Pablo
Escobar.
Most of the book deals with the
situations of each of the 10 kidnap
victims and the conditions of their
imprisonment. Six months was the
longest time that the last hostage was
held. Two died, one assassinated by
the drug dealers and the other hit ei-
ther by the drug side or the police
side during a police raid.
Recently the San Antonio Express
News carried an article of an ongo-
ing event occurring in Columbia.
Some of the disenfranchised drug
dealers, out of a job and the big
money they were accustomed to re-
ceiving, developed an insurance
scam. They approach a street person
and get them to sign some insurance
papers which in effect gives benefits
to the former drug dealer. Then the
insured victim is subsequently killed
for the money gained.
