Mustangs in the playoffs
Natalia upends Jackets
By Betty Kempf
The Natalia Mustangs did it
1 again.
With a playoff spot in District 30-
AAA riding on the outcome of
Friday's game in Sabinal, the Mus-
tangs held on for a 14-13 win.
With a 4-1-1 district mark, the
Mustangs head into bi-district play,
while the 4-2 Yellowjackets end
15), passing yardage (157-90), and polled
nearly even to 167 Hondo rushing yards
\\ith 165 of their own. Most important, how-
ever, was the 21-6 on the scoreboard, which
told of the Owls' winning margin. (Photo

their season with an overall mark of
7-3.
Natalia's playoff game will be
played Friday at 8 p.m. against un-
defeated Mason in Fredericksburg.
The Punchers were champions in
District 29-AA.
Sabinal scored early and scared
late on Natalia, but the difference
hinged on a missed extra point with
6:22 left in the contest The Jackets
needed only a tie to advance into the
playoffs.
The Jackets' First score came on
their First possession, when Kenny
West scored on a 3-yard run with
8:19 left in the first quarter. Junior
Contreras added the extra point to
complete the 39-yard, 5-plav drive.
Natalia countered with a TD in
the second quarter, when Anthony
Del Toro hauled in a 35-yard pass
from quarterback David Espinoza.
The senior signal-caller also added
the PAG, to tie the game at 7-7
with 8:12 remaining before inter-
mission.
Early in the third period, a pair of
15-yard penalties sent Natalia back
to its own 31, with a lst-and-40.
But all that distance and more was
picked up on one play.
Wingback Emilio Brooks took a
handoff, and zipped 69 yards for a
touchdown, with 10:41 left in the
period. The crucial extra point was
good, to make it a 14-7 Mustang
lead.
Neither team scored again until
midway through the fourth quarter
Sabinal pulled within a point when
West scored his second touchdown
of the evening. This one came from
the 2-yard line, and completed a 36-
yards drive in seven plays.
The clock showed 6:22 when the
extra point attempt by Contreras
sailed wide.
Sabinal lost many opportunties
in the game, as they turned the ball
over to the Mustangs seven times,
including Five fumbles and two inter-
ceptions.
Brooks was the game's leading
rusher, with 105 yards.
