1940 ......
The Last Meeting (1983)
In a series that has been revived
72 times over the years, the Hondo
Owls and Pearsall Mavericks,
nonetheless have gone for three
years without facing each other
on the gridiron.
The last time the two teams
rooked up was during the ninth
week of the 1983 season, with the
Mstrict 27-AAA championship
hanging in the balance.
An Owl win would make Hondo
the league champ, but a Pearsall
Win would have tossed the dis-
trict into a three-way tie between
[Hondo, Pearsall and Medina Val-
y-
As it turned out, Hondo won,
;3-2, securing yet another in its
ong line of playoff appearances.
The win over the Mavericks,
towever, wasn’t an easy one.
While Hondo’s offensive line
had "its best game ever," accord-
ing to head coach Mike Honey-
cutt, the 240-yard rushing perfor-
mance didn’t necessarily turn into
points on the board.
Midway through the first quar-
ter, the Owls tried to score out of a
fake field goal attempt, hut holder
Albert Contreras’ pass, intended
for tight end Jun-ny Barrios, fell
incomplete.
The Owls got it right back,
though, and scored on a 12-yard
pass from quarterback Darren
Ligon to sophomore splitend Jeff
Rochat. The scoring toss capped
a 35-yard, five-play drive, and
came with 1:58 left in the first
period. Luis Cardenas added the
extra point, to make it a 7-0 game.
Late in the first halt, a Pearsall
drive stalled at the Hondo 20
yard line.
Following a tripping penalty
against Hondo, ligon drifted back
into the endzone to puss, and was
caught for a safety by the Maver
ick defenders, tighten ing the score
to 7-2 with 2:25 on the clock.
Pearsall threatened to score
after taking the free kick near
midfield and driving to the 10-
yard line, but linebacker loanee
Brucks intercepted a pass from
Brandt fsley as time expired in
the half.
In the fourth period, a 52-yard
hurst bv Dale Richter took the
ball deep into Maverick territory
at the 8-yard line, but a fumbled
snap on the next play gave it
right hack to Pearsall.
With just 1:21 left in the final
quarter. Richter got the Owls’
second touchdown, blasting into
the endzone on a -lth-and-3, to
finish off a drive of 42 yards in
eight plays.
The win took the Owls’ season
record to 8-1 and was the ninth
straight Hondo win at Barry
Field. 1’he following week, Hondo
would close the regular season
with a game at Somerset.

hack Chester Pettibon (13) is tackled in the

wingback.
The offensive line averages 196,
and is anchored by a pair of big
tackles.
Chris Stautzenberger, whose
older brother Todd signed with the
Unviersity of,Texas on a football
scholarship last year, is a 225-
pound senior, while 220-pound
junior David Camacho is on the
other side.
Senior Mark Gonzales and junior
Roger Salinas are the guards, at
190 and 180 pounds, and a 170-
pound junior, Roger Leal is the
center. The Mavericks' tight end is
190-pound junior Willie Shelton.
Five players start on both offense
and on Pearsall's 5-2 defense,
including Shelton and Stautzenber-
ger at end and tackle, Adame and
Ely Gonzales at the halfback spots
and Cantu at free safety.
The rest of the Maverick defense
consists of Jimmy Jones at nose
guard, Billy Medina at right tackle
and Humberto Manzanarez at right
end.
The linebackers are Ray Chacon
and Jimmy Salcedo, both seniors,
and the strong safety is David
Danchak, also a senior. *
"The toughest area should be in
the trenches," said Porter, and 1
think if wc . u, control the game at
the line of scrimmage, we ll be in a
position to win the game.'
Presale tickets for the game are
$4 for adults, and $2 for students,
but all tickets at the gate will be
$4.
Owl Screeches
* Hondo and Pearsall really do
have an old rivalry going. This will
be the 73rd meeting between the
two schools. The Owls have faced
only the Uvalde Coyotes more
times (77).
The Owls lead the series (45-20-
7), with the 45 wins representing
the largest number of victories
against any team, except Devine,
whom the Owls have also
victimized 45 times.
Only Pearsall and Uvalde (wiih
32 wins over Hondo) have managed
to heat the Owls at least 20 times
The seven ties, including a 14 14
matchup in 1982. also reprerent the
most in any ot Hondo's series
* Should Hondo defeat Pearsall
this week, the Owls would then face
an area match against the w inner of
the Cuero - La Grange game.
lather way, it will be interesting.
Cuero is currently ranked #2 in the
state 3A poll behind Daingerfield,
while La Grange is coached by
former Hondo assistant, and Sabinal
head man, Jack Rushing.
The Randolph - Devine winner
will face the winner of the game
between Giddings and Edna.
* Hondo and Pearsall have met in
the playoffs on five other occasions
The Ow ls hold a 3-1-1 edge in those
games, but all five have been
decided by seven points or fewer.
* When Steve Tapia returned the
Southside pass 9S yards for the
interception I’D, it marked the first
touchdown by the Owl defense in
over two years.
In 1984, safety Albeit Contreras
had an 85-yard interception return
against the Bandera Bulldogs,
during the schixvls' first meeting
that year.
* Three players. Tapia, Lee Ray
Quintanilla, and Craig Weynand.
each got an interception against the
Cardinals last week.
[Yior to their efforts, only Tim
Carter and Paul Gonzales had come
away with pickoffs for the Owls
i this season. The team total is now
up to eight.
* How often is there a full-length
football game with only one punt?
That was the case last Friday.
The Cardinals never kicked it away,
and Hondo only punted once, for 23
yards, early in the second half.
* Owl fans may be wondering
how Barry Field was chosen as the
site of the game.
Pearsall was dead set against
playing at a neutral site (Hondo had
already reserved Harlandaie Stad-
ium), and decided that playing in
Hondo would be better than playing
on someone else's field
Other than the travel expenses,
Pearsall didn't make too bad of a
move... their allotted tickets are all
sold out.
* In the Medina Valley game,
Hondo senior placekicket Reau Van
De Walle booted a43-yarder as time
expired in the first half.
That kick broke a 26 year rid
HHS record held by John /err
"It was Bandera. I960.” said /err,
who until last spring, served as
Hondos athletic trainer. The kick
was from 42 yards out, and went
through the north goalpost at Barry
Field."
He then added, ”1 expect they’re
still searching for that ball."
* Some gixxl news came about
for the Owls this week, when Lee
Ray Quintanilla, injured against
Southside was cleared for action
against Pearsall. It was a slight
pinched nerve to the shoulder.
Also, Darrel Kotzur, who was
taken from Ro Hawk Stadium three
weeks ago in an ambulance, will be
ready to play this week. He’ll be
protecting the elbow he dislocated
with a special protective cast
designed by Owl trainer John
Hudson.
Ramon Bernal, who sustained a
■ne injury while being hit late in
the first quater last week, is
questionable for Friday, lies
awaiting a visit to the dvxrer this
w eek
Nathan Cans II and Ernie De la
Cruz, both with ir"ired ankles, are
out tor this week Carroll might
return it the Owls continue
advancing into the playoffs, but De
La Cruz, a senior, is out for the
year.
