part of Folklife Festival
The "largest block party in the
world" comes to San Antonio Aug.
2-5 when the 19th Annual Texas
Folklife Festival holds forth.
This great event, stressing the
many ethnic groups that comprise
the Texas population, has become
tradition for thousands of Texans
and their families each year.
In additon to seeing, hearing,
tasting and feeling evidence of the
rich heritage enjoyed by the State,

Educators meet in Austin
for leadership training
Irene Dubberly and Penny
Faseler from Hondo were among
the approximately 300 educators
who traveled to Austin July 16-17
to attend a leadership training
workshop sponsored by the Asso-
ciation of Texas Professional Edu-
cators (ATPE). With 50,700 mem-
bers, ATPE is the largest non-union
educator's association in the state
and nation. Membership consists
primarily of classroom teachers,
but also includes administrators,
paraprofessionals, retired educa-
tors, students and public members.
Dubberly and Faseler represented
the Hondo ATPE local unit.
The workshop was designed to
help local ATPE leaders prepare
for the upcoming school year. Par-
ticipants learned how to make sal-
ary and benefit presentations to
their local school boards, how to
position themselves as education
leaders and how to organize their
fall membership campaigns.
Highlighting the workshop was a
speech by Commissioner of Educa-
tion William Kirby, which pro-
vided an update on the status of
education in Texas for the 1990-91
school year, including updates on
Senate Bill 1, the education finance
law passed by the 71st Texas Leg-
islature in June, House Bill 2566,
and the career ladder law that re-
cently was * declared unconstitu-
tional by the Texas Supreme Court.

When a town hosts a group of tour-
ing travel writers it is foolish toexpect
quick results in the form of good
publicity.
Case in point: A group of travel
writers was hosted by the Hondo Area
Chamber of Commerce about March
1989.
In that length of time one might
suppose that the writers no longer
work for the media they represented
then, or they would have thrown their
notes into "file 13" by then.
Wrong!
Proof of the pudding came in a
story published recently in the Fort
Worth Star-Telegram under the
byline of Shirley Jinkins.
Ms Jinkins' excellent article cov-
ered about 30 column inches of space
and pictured the D'Hanis Brick & Tile
and the Medina County Museum.
Its contents, done in good, interest-
ing and clever writing, covered the
Museum, the famous postcard, the
railroad, the "snatching" of the
county seat from Castroville, Old
D'Hanis, Country Mart in D'Hanis,
D'Hanis Brick & Tile, the diner car
which makes a turn-around in Hondo,
the hunting industry, the 777 Game
Ranch, Medina Lake, several historic
buildings, special businesses, & res-
taurants and Johnny Wilson's "Col-
lege of Knowledge" including the
reminder to wear asbestos earmuffs.
There wasn’t much left to cover and
despite thefact that it came 16 months
after the wirter visited the area, it was
a "darn good piece of publicity for the
city and the environs which surround
it."
If you don't believe it just ask the
folks over at the Chamber of Com- someone mailed them a copy of the
merce office. They were estatic when story.
Airbase to attract old-timers
Stepping back in time to relive their
days at Hondo Airbase, several per-
sons who were stationed here in the
base's heyday will gather for a Hondo
Military Reunion on October 19-20.
Headquartering at the Airport Holi-
day Inn, the group will "take in" San
Antonio the night they arrive. This
will be accomplished by enjoying a
River Barge Dinner while cruising
down the river.
Saturday, October 20 will be the
"re-living day" as they plan a bus trip
to Hondo.
Once here they will visit the Med-
ina County Museum and enjoy lunch
at the Flightline Restaurant, which is
a converted navigation classroom
containing many reminders of "the
days that were."
The return trip will include a drive
through the old Navigation School
area and static aircraft display at
Lackland AFB.
The group will end its "back in
time" gathering with a banquet at the
Airport Holiday Inn.
Anyone4n the immediate area who
would be interested in joining the
party may do so by paying a $5 regis-
tration fee.
Costs include: $16 for River Barge
Dinner, $ 15 for Hondo Tour, and $ 17
for banquet.
Send registration fee plus money
for those events you plan to attend to:

0010.

accompanied his wife for this occa-
sion.

day where he had a meeting with Lord
Kendleton who is a landscape de-
signer and member of the House of *
Lords. LionaJs' host then took h :n to
the Actual House and let him watch
the House in session
At the present time Susan has two
designing projects underway, in Los
Angeles, California and Sante Fe,
New Mexico.
