WHAT HAPPENED?
Sadly, family violence is not a
bacteria that responds to antibiotics.
It's a learned behavior, not a disease!
Abuse follows a well worn pattern
with a need to overcome jealousy,
constant questioning and accusations
of infidelity. Abuse can also take the
form of verbal or emotional harass-
ment which might include threats,
withholding access to money or con-
trolling activities of another person.
This type of abuse is usually accom-
panied by physical violence.
The big obstacle in changing a per-
son who batters another is overcom-
ing myths associated with abusive
families. Most often heard phrases are
'their behavior justified a beating’ or
saying 'she made me do it' or perhaps
it's 'I can't control myself. The phrase
most often heard of batterers is "It's
because I was drinking!'
Getting aperson to admit a problem
exists is not too difficult. All you need
say is "Look,what you did!"
The biggest problem is making the
decision to change your own behav-
ior. Whether it’s beating your wife or
smoking.
Batterers see violence as a way of
controlling another person through
fear and intimidation. They have to be
taught that control is not all there is in
a relationship. Violence is never an
acceptable or justifiable way to solve
problems. We wish there was a mir-
acle cure!
