Yes, I can!
Do you know of a handicapped child
who needs encouragement? Have you
ever wished there was a way to
“officially” recognize the child for his
or her achievements?
Throughout the nation, handi-
capped and disabled children are
working hard to overcome the
tremendous obstacles that they faoe.
Thousands of these special children
are touched each year by the
Foundation For Exceptional
Children’s "Yes, I Can?’ program.
Through this campaign, the general
public is encouraged to write to "Yea,
I Can !” about the accomplishments of
a handicapped child they know. In
response to these letters, "Yes, I
Can!” sends the children a Certificate
of Achievement'attesting to his or her
accomplishments. Those who write to
nominate a child for a Certificate of
Achievement are further encouraged
to fill out nomination papers so that
their nominee may be considered for
the “Yes, I Can!” Awards Program.
Awards are given in five categories
ranging from academics to com-
munity service.
Public support is needed to
continue the "Yes, I Can?’ program.
Tax deductible contributions and
inquiries about the Foundation and
its work may be sent directly to the

Multi-million tax break coming to Texas

CHECK THESE...Leslie and
Carolyn Muennink, who live
two miles south of Hondo on
the Yancey Road (FM 462),
have had some gardening suc-
cess this year with its gener-
ous rains, in the form of giant
tomatoes. And they brought
these 1 ‘4-pound and 1-pound
monsters by the newspaper
office to prove it. "I’ve got the
best garden this year that I
believe I’ve ever had," said
Mr. Muennink.
Texans will get a multi-million
dollar tax break because of a Senate
vote on the federal tax overhaul bill
that will permit partial deduction of
state sales tax according to state
comptroller Bob Bullock.
Bullock said the sales tax amend-
ment, co-sponsored by Texas Sen.
Phil Gramm and supported by Texas
Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, would let Texas
taxpayers deduct 60 percent of their
state and local taxes in figuring
federal income taxes.
"The sales tax provision will save
Texans who use this deduction at
least $112 million. Anytime we don’t
have to send over $100 million to
Washington, it's good news,” Bullock
said
Bullock said Gramm's amendment
was especially beneficial to Texas
because the tax reform hill pending in
the U.S. Senate originally allowed
deductions for state and local income
taxes.
*We were being penalized because
we didn’t have a state income tax
despite the fact that we don't want an
income tax,” Bullock said.
Bullock said the amendment would
save a deduction worth more than
$270 to the average Texas taxpayer
who files an itemized return.
He said that Texans claimed an
average of $449 in sales tax
deductions in 1984 and the 60 percent
rule would preserve most of that
deduction.
According to Bullock, about 27
percent of Texas taxpayers itemize
^ on federal returns so the amendment
allowing sales tax deductions will
affect more than one-in-four tax-
payers.
