Hondo Garden Club honors new members
The home of Mrs. Emmett
Pope, with Mrs.'Elmo Pope
as co-hostess, was the scene
of a lovely coffee September
3 honoring new members of
the Hondo Garden Club.
Guests were greeted at
the door by Mrs. Pope and
Club president, Mrs. Hilmer
Haegelin.
The serving table was
covered with a beautiful
Italian cut-work tablecloth
with matching napkins be-
longing to Mrs. Emmett
Pope.
The centerpiece was a
striking arrangement of tro-
pical fruit on a large silver
tray. The pineapple in the
center was decorated with
HANGTAGS
Those informative hang-
tags that manufacturers are
using help them to reinforce
product image, performance
qualities and lifestyle-
fashion signals to con-
sumers, says Alma Fonseca,
a clothing specialist on the
home economics staff of the
Texas Agricultural Exten-
sion, Texas A&M University
System. Consistency in the
logo and color and shape of
the hangtag links the pro-
duct with the manufacturer,
she adds.
strawberries interspersed
among the spikes^ and was
surrounded by cantaloupe,
watermelon and honey dew
balls; slices of mango and
kiwi; strawberries, grapes
and slices of pineapple.
One end of the table was
graced by a silver tray
decorated with orchids and
filled with cream puffs.
There were also trays of
banana nut breads and
cheese crisps.
Mrs. Elmo Pope presided
over the beautiful silver
coffee and tea service.

If you'd be happy
to have one of Texas'
three biggest spenders1
for your Congressman,
congratulations.
You've got him.
If you live in Texas’ 23rd District
But, if you’re not so happy, maybe
you’ll have an opportunity to say so
and ask questions.
If he ever comes back from
Washington.
Texas’ 23rd District is repre-
sented by the third biggest spender
from the state of Texas. Chick
Kazen.
That puts him among the top
10% nationwide.2 That means 391
Congressmen voted to spend less.'
To be more prudent with your
tax dollars.
Kazen even admits he’s one
of the biggest spenders in Congress.
Claiming that the major expenditure^
lie in national defense.
Perhaps the Congressman is
unaware that defense spending has
dropped from 43% of the budget
when he took office, to a post WW II
low of 24%.
Meanwhile, social se, vices and
welfare spending has increased from
21% to nearly half of the entire fed-
eral budget, in the same period.
Yet Chick Kazen claims to be a
“fiscal conservative" or conservative
Democrat. When the National Tax-
payers Union, an independent group
headquartered in Washington, D.C.
clearly says that he is not.
If you believe that elected offi-
cials are answerable for their actions
and votes, then you have a chance to
say so loud and clear this November.

Wentworth
CONGRESSMAN FOR THE’80s
If you're not so happy,
say so this November.
Vote Jeff Wentworth.
He has a demonstrated record
for sound planning and sane spending
as a Bexar County Commissioner.
Where for 5-1/2 years he made
his presence felt as an advocate
of citizens’ rights and fiscal
conservatism.
County Courthouse good ol’ boys
weren’t happy with Jeff. But his
constituents were. Returning him
to office by better than a two-to- one
margin of approval.
So vote for Jeff Wentworth.
He did right by us as County
Commissioner. He’ll do even better
as Congressman, Texas 23rd
