wife Barbara outside of Devine, said
Jbeing semi-retired from construc-

aware of the road conditions in Pet

the citizens. 1
"I want to support the folks in Pet.

Hondo librarian joins state training program
This fall, Hondo Public Library
director Fred Johnson joined 125 of
his colleagues from around the state
taking part in the Texas State
Library's Small Library Manage-
ment Training Program. The pro-
gram is designed to provide and en-
hance basic management skills of
library directors in smaller commu-
nities who have not had formal li-
brary school coursework.
Five core courses are offered over
a two and half year period, including
Administration and Planning, Col-
lection Development, Reference
Services, Cataloging and Automa-
tion, and Advanced Management Is-
sues. Participants attend a two-day
workshop each spring and fall until
they have completed the entire pro-
gram, and receive up to 14 hours of
State-approved continuing educa-
tion credit for each session they at-
tend.
Johnson has attended all four ses-
sions offered so far, and he will be
one of the first program graduates
next spring.
These training sessions are inten-
sive, stimulating, and exhaustive.
Participants are encouraged to apply
the theories and practices learned to
their own unique situations, and to
network with other librarians in their
region. Johnson's active involve-
ment in the State Library training
program represents a substantial
commitment of time, energy and
personal expense in an effort to
improve his skills as an information
professional. This commitment
leads directly to a better served and
more informed local citizenry.
"Congratulations are in order to
the city of Hondo for having such a
dedicated professional managing the
library!" said Belinda Boon, Con-
tinuing Education Consultant, Li-
brary Development, Texas State
Library. "Take the time this week to
stop by and commend Mr. Johnson
on his efforts. Your encouragement
and support will help him reach his
education and training goals, and
result in better library services for
the entire community."
Julie Aguirre, manager of Security
Finance in Hondo, announced that
its affiliate company established a
private charitable foundation.
Security's Lending Hand Founda-
tion, to allow each of its offices to
give something back to the local
community. The amount of this
contribution is based on the number
of new customers who chose to do
business with Security Finance dur-
ing 1995.
Aguirre presented an $800 check
to HISD Superintendent N.E. '
Woolls for Hondo Nursing Home
School program.
"This means our customers are
also indirectly contributing to their
community," said Aguirre. "All the
employees at Security want to ex-
press our sincere gratitude to our
customers who made this contribu-
tion possible."
The local office is one of Conti-
nental Credit Corporation's and Se-
curity Finance Corporation's over
500 consumer loan offices which
operate in 12 states.
HO-HO-HO. .. Kids gave Santa a Ho-Ho-Hondo welcome Friday night. He handed out candy, wished
everyone a Merry Christmas and visited with kids to find out who was naughty and nice. Firemen helped
Santa and McGruff climb onto the fire truck before joining in the parade which made its way through town
before stopping off at City Hall where kids were lined up to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.
