While we do not have “con-

kiddoes and airplane huffs, it
was a thrilling event! And we
had folks who had never
been to Hondo tell us how
much they enjoyed our town
and would definitely return!
That's kinda nice, isn't it?

•We take this time to honor

area - if you've been reading
the paper at all this year, you
are aware of the quality of the
young adults who will be
graduating this year. In this
day and age, it seems we hear
TOO much of the negative
aspects of this nation’s youth;
but looking at our local
youth, isn't it EXCELLENT
that we all accentuate the
positive! The qqality of these
young professionals and
leaders is absolutely out-
standing! These young folks
have certainly excelled, in
academics, in sports and in
the impact they make within
our communities. IOBWELL

Storms give aquifer a boost,
but drought not over yet
San Antonio - Though re-
cent storms have offered a
welcofne respite from a bone-
dry South Texas spring, SAWS
officials are cautioning area
resident that the drought is
not over.
While the refreshing rains
have boosted the Edwards
Aquifer level by six feet or
more, rainfall totals for the year
are still less than half of normal
levels. Considering last year’s
exceptional rainfall deficit, the
aquifer outlook for 2006 con-
tinues to be a serious concern,
“Because aquifer levels have
gotten such a nice bump up,
we now expect to hit Stage One
drought restrictions around
mid-June,” said SAWS Conser-
vation Director Karen Guz.
"That’s about two weeks later
than previously expected.
However, without a perma-
nent change to the long-term
weather pattern, these recent
storms are still only postpon-
ing the inevitable."
As of Monday, the aquifer
was at 669 feet. Stage one
drought restrictions begin
when the aquifer drops below
650 feet. But while the current
level is still slightly above nor-
mal, it can drop by a foot or
more per day during the
spring and early summer due
to heavy demand.
Guz noted that a combina1
tion of rain and common-
sense conservation are both
required to help stave off pos-
sible drought restrictions.
“The recharge value of the
rain is greatly magnified when
people remember to turn off
their sprinklers,” Guz added.
“After a major rain event like
this one, most people won’t
need to water their lawns for
at least a week or two. And
that’s where the real boost to
the aquifer will come from."
Though Stage One restric-
tions may be delayed into
lune.Year Round restrictions
remain in effect until then.
These restrictions include:
• Landscape watering with
an irrigation system or sprin-
kler is permitted any day of
the week between the hours
of 8 p.m. and 10 a.m.
• Watering with a hand-
held hose, drip irrigation or
bucket is permitted any time
of day.
• Water waste is prohibited
at all times. Allowing water to
run off into a gutter, ditch, or
drain or failing to repair a
controllable leak is consid-
ered water waste.
Detailed drought restric-
tions information is available
online at www.saws.org/con-
servation.
