A team of teenage burglars
were leaving the site of their
third break-in of the night when
they ran into alert Hondo police
officers. The five teenagers had
broken into an office suite at 805
Highway 90, which houses
Steve Trevifio Jewelers, SPJST
Fraternal Insurance and Charles
Johnson Finance. Each of the
businesses had been ransacked,
according to police.
Sergeant Mark Martinez was on
patrol on 19th Street (U.S. 90) at
about 1 a.m. Thursday when he
observed one suspect standing by
the door of the insurance business.
The suspect saw Martinez and fled
on foot. Martinez observed the
young man and another subject
enter a white Pontiac parked in the
rear of the business and then they
fled the scene with the officer in
pursuit. Martinez called for
backup just before the driver of
the Pontiac slammed on his brakes
on Avenue I. Three of the suspects
exited the car and fled on foot.
Martinez continued to chase the
driver of the Pontiac and his
companion, finally stopping the
car on 18th Street.
Martinez and Officer Larry
Hoffman arrested two Pearsall
youths, the 15-year old driver and
his 14-year old passenger, while
assisting officers returned to the
site of the break-in to clear the
area, in the event any accomplices
were still hiding in the building,
which is located on the southeast
corner Of the intersection of
Avenue 1 and Highway 90.
After the two suspects in the
Pontiac were placed under arrest,
the car was searched. According
to Martinez, he found evidence
from all three businesses which
were broken into. Also found
were several bags of
miscellaneous property and a
bank bag containing receipts
from businesses in Devine.
Devine Police Department
investigator Chris Andrews
arrived in Hondo and confirmed
many of the items discovered in
the Pontiac were from a rash of
burglaries which plagued Devine
over the last two weeks.

are working closely with Devine
PD to identify the three young
burglars who fled the Pontiac on
foot. Police officers believe this
team of five teens committed as
many as 10 to 12 burglaries in
Devine. With their arrest,
approximately 32 burglaries in
the Pearsall—Frio County area
could also be cleared.
After the suspects fled on foot,
the trio obviously found a truck
with keys in the ignition in the
2600 block of Avenue J and fled
Hondo in the stolen truck. The
truck was later recovered in
Devine by Devine PD.
Police received information
identifying the youths who fled
on foot before stealing the truck
and are currently obtaining
warrants for their arrest, said
Sgt. Martinez on Monday.
“There were three additional
suspects,” he confirmed.
The two Pearsall youths were
taken before Justice May Kempf
Lathe where they were
magistrated. Devine Police then
transported the Pearsall
teenagers to the Juvenile
Detention Center in Jourdanton.

Library board term limits removed
By William Hoover
Anvil Herald Correspondent
Mayor Jim Danner Monday
asked council to strike the
provision placing term limits on
Hondo Municipal Library board
members so he could reappoint
people to their third two-year term
and to encourage service on the
city’s volunteer service boards.
City Manager Robert Herrera
agreed with the move saying he
saw no reason for there to be term
limits on the board, which has no
independent decision-making or
spending authority.
The mayor said the issue was
brought to council on June 6
when it was discovered the
library board was the only city
advisory board with term limits.
“We held up the appointment of
three members whose terms
expired in April to look into this
issue,” said Danner. “Our
response is bringing this
ordinance to you. By amending
the ordinance, we can ensure
consistency on the boards while
continuing to allow council to
appoint people willing to serve
on these boards.”
Danner asked for a motion to
strike the sentence from the
library board’s enabling
legislation which stated, “No
board member shall serve more
than two consecutive terms.”
Councilman Vance Tomey
offered the motion to strike the
sentence and do away with term
limits on the library board. The
motion passed unanimously after
a second from Councilwoman
Ann-Michelle Long.
Danner then recommended
reappointing Medina County
Clerk Elva Miranda, local retiree
Sarah Moss, and Glenn Klaus, an
employee of the Texas
Department of Corrections, to
their third consecutive terms on
the library advisory board. Klaus
is presently chairman of the
library board. Although term
limits have been removed for
board members, Klaus said
chairpersons are informally
limited to two consecutive two-
year terms before they must
relinquish their position.
Councilman Chris Stiegler
offered the motion to accept the
mayor’s appointees. The motion
passed unanimously after a
second from Long.

Rotary reports successful golf tourney
By William Hoover

The Hondo/D’Hanis Rotary
Club held its first Best Ball Golf
Tournament Saturday, June 11,
at the Flying L Golf Resort in
Bandera. The fundraiser was
intended to help the club, whose
motto is “Service above Self,”
pay for community projects.
“It went wonderfully,” said club
President-Elect Glenda Stark.
“We did not have as many players
as we would have liked to have
had, but the ones who did play
said they had a wonderful time."
Current Rotary President Irvin
Still, President of Ever Change
Youth Academy, will officially
relinquish his seat to Stark on
July 1.
Stark said she expected word of
mouth publicity for the event
would help the Rotary’s 2nd
Annual Best Ball Golf
Tournament, tentatively planned
for June 2006, grow in size
tremendously. “We had great
prizes, the weather was wonderful
and the Flying L folks could not
have been nicer or gone out of
their way more to help us,” she
said. “They were just fantastic.”
The Rotarians were eager to
hone their golfing skills and have
fun while raising money for the
scholarships and various
recognition awards they bestow
on deserving community leaders,
as well as for the club’s Christmas
Bikes for Tikes program.
“A lot of members never
golfed before but they just
jumped right in there and did a
super job,” said Stark. “We
raised a little over $2,00b.”
Taking first place was the
team of David Jones and Jeff
Rusk. Second place went to
Steve Wilson and Jack Gruber.
using Brown Field grants. When
using a Brown Field grant, the
city would be required to clean
the surface of the site as much
as practical, restrict access to the
land with a fence and restrict use
of water in the shallow Uvalde
Gravels Aquifer via concrete
caps and deed restrictions.
In return, the federal govern-
ment and TCEQ would release
the city of all liability associated
with the contamination, which,
according to Environmental
Consultant Cal Chapman, was
originally caused by the United
States Army and later the U.S.
Air Force and its contractors.
Upon retuning to open
session, council opted to take no
action on the environmental
settlement or the economic
development project.
• Since the next meeting date
would fall on Monday, July 4,

Council will be held Tuesday,
July 5, at 6 p.m. in city hall. The
meeting is open to the public.
