Flu shots now available
The flu season will soon he
here, and annual flue shots
are currently available at
local clinics and doctors'
offices.
The flu vaccination is
widely misunderstood to be
a preventative measure for
the mild two to five day
"flue” so many people con-
tact every year, character-
ized by fever, body aches,
dry cough, and headache.
This illness is caused by a
viruit and is treated with
bedrest, fluids, and aspirin
Otherwise healthy people
recover spontaneously.
Influenza, on the other
hand, occurs in epidemic
form, with the vaccine being
re-formulated annually^ to
reflect the predicted preva-
lence of certain strains of
influenza virus. The illness is
more severe, lasts longer,
and complications such as
pneumonia are more
common, particularly in
older patients or those with
chronic illness
If no epidemic occurs, then
the flu shot is of no help, but,
if it does occur, those not
vaccinated will be unpro-
tected, and it will often be
too late to get the vaccin-
ation.
The group of people at
risk for serious illness and
complications of epidemic
influenza are the following:
a People with heart
disease.
b. People with lung
diseases such as emphy-
sema, asthma, , TB. cystic
fibrosis.
c People with severe kid-
ney disease,
d People with Diabetes,
e People over the age of
65.
These should be
vaccinated annually.
Those who have had
“reactions" in past years
should consult their doctor,
as the vaccine has been
changed and purified contin-
uously, and reactions with
the modern vaccine are rare.

“One advantage of talking
to yourself is that you are
sure that at least one person
is listening
At one time or another
you've probably heard that
the food served at a nursing
home is not fit to be eaten.
Well. I'd like to pass on a few
comments from our
residents about the frxid
they eat daily and find out
how the kitchen staff feel
about their jobs.
Juan Cortez, Pedro Rod
riguez, Lupe Silva. Katie
Naegelin. Eugene Morgan
and Vera Broil all said they
like what they've served
most of the Jime
“Sometimes I like it and
sometimes I don't." com-
ments Rilla Day .
"It tastes good and I
always get enough to eat I
never leave the table
hungry," says Marjorie
Lockwood.
Dorothy Brown says, "I'm
on a diet and I don't like the
things I have to eat "
"I like the food, but I'd like
more fried ■foods." mentions
Jack Sharp
Christopher Reed com-
mented, "Pretty good, tastes
good, but they give mo too
much to eat."
And Oscar Blum said
'"Overall I like the food The
kitchen is real cooperative to
my tastes
We have many more resi-
dents but column space pre
vents all their comments
The kitchen staff here
include: Lupe Villarreal.
Food Service Supervisor;
Elvira Palomo, Josie Gomez
and Carmen Perez, cooks;
and Eudelia Escamilla Olga
Contreras and Linda Garcia,
helpers.
Everyone’s taste varies
and it really is hard to please
everyone at each meal Diets
vary, according to the in-
dividual's doctor’s specified
tinns But the staff prepares
each individual tray so that
each resident is getting a
balanced meal. The kitchen
staff tries to give everyone
what they would like, and
still stay within each resi
dents diet.
Everyday I see them take
jhe time to visit With the
residents, listen -to their
requests, fill them if pos'si
ble, and where they can't da
what is asked, they explain
why they have to say no.
Their work is more than
just a job that has to tie
done, they really care Each
member of the staff have
their own personal reasons
for working here but upper
most'in their minds is the
concern that the food is good
, and the residenfs don't have
to worry that what they’re •
being served won't have apv
taste.
Some of the activities we
• had last week included mass
for the residents, games,
dancing, and just listening to
music. Our choir is just at
lit tel disorganized yet hut
with time we’ll get our act
together
